Job summary

Podtech Data Centers Inc. is seeking a senior Controls Engineer to lead design, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of Automation and Controls for air- and liquid-cooled HPC data centers.

You will drive control philosophy, select topologies, and support implementation to ensure peak performance. Ideal candidates bring 5+ years in mission-critical facilities, strong PLC/SCADA knowledge, and experience with DCIM and energy management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical engineering discipline with 5+ years in controls/automation in heavy industrial or mission-critical settings.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical/mechanical cooling systems, field devices, sensors, actuators, and wiring for control/monitoring.
  • Solid understanding of control frameworks, inputs/outputs mapping, PLCs, SCADA, interconnection and protocols.
  • Knowledge of control theory (PID, ON/OFF, hysteresis) and robust problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with industrial networks and communication protocols; excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the first point of contact for data center controls and automation projects.
  • Develop a coherent controls philosophy for seamless integration and operation of data center systems.
  • Lead or participate in design, construction or commissioning phases and coordinate with stakeholders.
  • Evaluate platforms and DCIM tools for energy management and alarm handling.
  • Collaborate with mechanical/electrical engineers to ensure proper system integration.
  • Ensure new equipment integrates with enterprise monitoring platforms.
  • Stay updated on new control technologies to maintain leading-edge operations.
  • Coach and train staff on control theory and tools.

Reporting to the VP – Engineering (functionally) and the Head of Operations (operationally) the Controls Engineer will lead the company’s efforts in relation to the design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of Automation and Controls systems for our air or liquid-cooled High Performance Computing (HPC) Data Centers.

Reporting to the VP – Engineering (functionally) and the Head of Operations (operationally) the Controls Engineer will lead the company’s efforts in relation to the design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of Automation and Controls systems for our air or liquid-cooled High Performance Computing (HPC) Data Centers. This role is targeted for a seasoned individual in data center or other mission-critical facility management, understanding of all the interdependencies between mechanical and electrical systems used in such type of facilities, and able to select and develop conceptual control topologies, lead or participate in their detailed design and support in their implementation, commissioning and operation This person will be considered a key point of contact within the company, will be placed at the forefront of the decision making and will be involved in the whole project life cycle, ensuring the selected control and automation systems, are fit for purpose and perform at the highest and most efficient possible level.

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor Degree in a technical engineering discipline with at least 5 years of experience in the controls and automation fields in a heavy industrial or mission-critical setup.
  • Sound knowledge of electrical and mechanical cooling systems and their modes of operation, relevant magnitudes, their typical field devices, their sensors and actuators (e.g. energy, temperature, pressure, flow, vibration), their signal types and wiring methods for control and monitoring
  • Strong understanding of controls and automation frameworks and tools like mapping of mechanical/electrical physical systems inputs and outputs, PLCs, SCADA systems, systems interconnection and communication protocols
  • Sound understanding of control theory (e.g. PID loops, ON/OFF control with hysteresis, scaled inputs from separate control algorithms, etc)
  • Knowledge of industrial networks and the different communication protocols used in them
  • Excellent abstract thinking, as well as analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to cater to different audiences with diverse backgrounds, from junior staff to senior leadership
  • Self-driven individual, with attention to detail and ability to execute high-quality work with limited direction
  • Ability to deal comfortably with uncertainty and limited resources or information
Job Responsibilities

The Data Center Controls Engineer will focus on the following as well as other job-related duties and/or projects as assigned.

  • Act as first point of contact for all matters related to project development of data center controls and automation for our High Performance Computing data centers
  • Understand mechanical and electrical systems used in data centers, their function, modes of operation and interdependencies, being able to develop a coherent controls philosophy that allows a seamless integration and efficient operation
  • Lead or participate as necessary in any design, construction or commissioning efforts as part of the different projects life cycle, acting as company's key point of contact for controls and automation discipline
  • Understand different platforms and tools used in the control of mission-critical facilities, including data center infrastructure management (DCIM) solutions, like energy management, alarm management, etc.
  • Work with mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure proper system integration and equipment operation, making sure that new equipment or changes in operational conditions and physical requirements are captured and translated seamlessly into the relevant control designs and systems.
  • Provide input to ensure new equipment and systems are properly and seamlessly integrated into the company’s existing enterprise monitoring platforms
  • Stay current with new technologies in the controls and automation fields, allowing the company to be at the leading edge of design and operational excellence of data centers.
  • Coach and train other staff on the theory, design and use of control systems and tools
