Job description

Join our IT Team- Where Technology Meets Excellence

  • Own the financial picture and help a company make better decisions
  • Winkler, Manitoba (hybrid) | 30 to 40 hours per week | Four-day week negotiable

If someone forwarded you this and said "this sounds like you," they were probably right.

Some finance roles are about producing reports. This one is about making a company better at deciding.

SolutionsIT is a Manitoba-based managed technology company serving clients across Canada and the United States. We have a capable bookkeeper, solid systems, and good external CPA support. What we do not currently have is someone whose whole job is to own the financial picture across the company, bring more depth to it, and make sure the right information reaches the right people in time to act on it.

That's the job. It reports directly to the President and sits in our leadership meetings from the first week. And while we're a technology company, this is not a technical role. You don't need an IT background.

You cannot let a discrepancy go. It sits with you until you find it, and you're not entirely sure why other people can walk past it.

You are the one friends and family send things to - a contract, a renewal notice, a mortgage statement - because you will actually read it and tell them what it means.

You can explain a number to someone who doesn't like accounting and have them genuinely understand it. That is a skill, and not everyone has it.

You can tell someone if their idea will not work, kindly, and still be on good terms with them afterward.

And somewhere along the way, you have defaulted as the person quietly holding a system together on top of your actual job - catching what other people missed, without much of anyone noticing.

We would like for that to be your actual job.

What you would own:

You would take ownership of the financial function end to end. Concretely, that means five areas.

  • The close and the reporting.
  • A monthly close that finishes on a calendar you set, complete and reviewed before it reaches the President. Reporting that comes with your commentary attached, not just your numbers. And board and shareholder reporting you're prepared to present and defend yourself.
  • The margin story.
  • We run five service lines - product resale, technical services, professional services, managed services, and cloud and shared infrastructure - each with its own gross margin target. You would own the reporting that shows which ones are healthy, which are drifting, and why. When the numbers point at a delivery or pricing problem, you would be the one who takes it to the leader who can fix it. And you would make sure our operating system and our general ledger tell the same story every month.
  • Cash.
  • A rolling cash forecast the President actually reads. Receivables, credit decisions, and payment commitments followed through to closure rather than to the promise. Working capital, inventory, and the banking relationship - including covenant compliance, which becomes yours to monitor and report.
  • Controls that don't quietly stop working.
  • Inventory counts get missed. Old stock builds up. A licence renews at a higher price and a larger seat count and nobody reviewed either. These are not dramatic failures - they're small, slow, and expensive. Your job is not to be more vigilant than everyone else. It's to design controls with a named owner, a schedule, and evidence they happened, and then to test them and tell us where they failed. Payment authorization and vendor banking changes would sit with you.
  • Planning and better decisions.
  • We have a budget process. It's semi-formal and it needs to grow up, and you would be the one to mature it - built with department leaders owning their own numbers, with a rolling forecast alongside it. You would help evaluate hiring, pricing, equipment, vehicles, and financing before we commit, and measure how it turned out afterward. And you'd build the CEO dashboard, which doesn't exist yet, and keep it short enough to be useful.

You will also be expected to lead and develop our bookkeeper, and make sure payroll, billing, and payables all have documented backup so nothing in finance depends on one person being available.

Why this job is worth having

Most controller jobs give you a slice. This one gives you the whole business - small enough that you can hold all of it in your head, complex enough that holding it is interesting. Recurring revenue, project work, inventory, cross-border clients, and a technology stack that changes faster than most balance sheets do.

A meaningful part of this role is building things that aren't there yet - the forecast, the dashboard, the control framework, a real budget process. If you've been maintaining someone else's system and would rather design your own, that's most of what your first year would be.

And you can still have a life. Thirty to forty hours. We're open to a four-day week or another arrangement that works. You'd spend more time in the Winkler office while you learn the business; after that, this can be as little as one predictable office day a week.

What you would bring

You understand accounting, but you're more interested in the business and the story behind the numbers. You have owned a full monthly close, not just supported one. You have built or rebuilt a budget. You have designed a control that caught something.

Experience with margin analysis, forecasting, and internal controls matters more to us than the size of the company you did it at. You should be able to step into bookkeeping or payroll when you need to, even though that isn't where you'd spend your week.

QuickBooks experience helps. Experience with ConnectWise, CPQ platforms, inventory, project-based work, or managed technology services is a real advantage - but we can teach the industry to someone who brings the judgment.

A CPA designation is welcome and valued, but it is not required. We have external CPA support for year-end, tax, and technical questions, and we would rather have the right person than the right letters.

We provide the training you need to excel, and we're committed to creating an environment where your growth and our clients' success go hand in hand.

Ready to do work you actually enjoy? Let's talk.

We strive for excellence in everything we do- including finding the right team members to represent our company and support our culture.

About us

SolutionsIT helps clients thrive with technology. We care about clear communication, strong follow-through, good judgment, clear processes, and treating people well. We hire for aptitude, attitude, and alignment with our values, not just credentials.
