Job summary

A respected law firm in Vancouver seeks an experienced Controller to join its finance leadership team. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role oversees financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and process improvements while leading a finance group.

You will develop models, communicate results to stakeholders, manage the full accounting cycle, and coordinate with external auditors and senior leadership on strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years progressive accounting experience.
  • Minimum 2 years leadership/management experience.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and financial modeling skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop financial models and perform detailed analysis to support business decisions.
  • Interpret and communicate financial results and trends to stakeholders.
  • Analyze profitability, cost efficiency, financial performance, and operational initiatives.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations that support planning and strategy.
  • Provide ad hoc financial reporting and analysis as required.
  • Oversee the full accounting cycle, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of financial statements across multiple entities, including consolidations.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and quarterly reforecasting.
  • Develop, monitor, and improve internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Research accounting, tax, and compliance matters and provide recommendations to leadership.
  • Support enhancements to financial systems and reporting capabilities.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring KPIs for accounting and finance functions.
  • Lead and develop accounting staff; oversee AP/AR and compliance.
  • Coordinate with auditors, vendors, and internal stakeholders as required.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Analysis & Reporting

Team Leadership & Operations
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff while promoting accuracy, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, compliance processes, and general accounting functions.
  • Manage workload distribution and ensure completion of departmental objectives.
  • Foster a culture focused on excellence, customer service, continuous improvement, and collaboration.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, vendors, and internal stakeholders as required.
  • Participate in strategic planning, risk management initiatives, and operational improvement projects.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of leadership or managerial experience.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and financial modeling skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
Preferred
  • Experience working with ERP systems such as Elite 3E or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of SQL.
  • Experience with Power BI or other business intelligence tools.
  • Background in a professional services environment.
