Job summary

Horizon Recruitment is seeking a Controller to lead accounting operations in Canada, reporting to the senior finance executive. The role focuses on strong internal controls, system improvements, and insightful management reporting to support strategic growth.

Key responsibilities include overseeing payroll and statutory compliance, coordinating audits, and guiding budgeting and forecasting. CPA designation and leadership experience are required, with a passion for process improvement.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation required.
  • University degree in Accounting or related discipline.
  • Progressive accounting leadership experience including managing a finance team.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards, CRA requirements, and financial reporting.
  • Experience overseeing payroll, benefits administration, and statutory compliance.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and management reporting.
  • Experience with ERP/financial management platforms; Blackbaud Financial Edge asset.
  • Advanced Excel skills; proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Not-for-profit and/or fund accounting experience is an asset.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Self-motivated with a continuous improvement mindset and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all accounting operations including general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Safeguard assets through strong internal controls and financial management practices.
  • Prepare quarterly financial statements, forecasts, variance analysis, and management reporting.
  • Support annual budgeting process and provide financial analysis for strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee payroll, benefits, RRSP administration, and statutory remittances.
  • Manage accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and senior accounting staff.
  • Improve financial reporting through automation, standardized processes, and dashboards.
  • Monitor cash flow, treasury activities, investments, and credit facilities.
  • Coordinate annual audits, regulatory reporting, tax filings, and compliance.
  • Oversee capital asset accounting and monitor project spending vs budgets.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to support fundraising and donor reporting.
  • Recommend improvements to financial systems, policies, and controls.

Reporting to the senior finance executive, this position is responsible for maintaining strong financial controls, leading the accounting function, improving financial systems and reporting, and providing the insights needed to support sound business decisions.   • Prepare quarterly financial statements, forecasts, variance analysis, and management reporting.
  • Support the annual budgeting process and provide financial analysis for strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee payroll, employee benefits, RRSP administration, and statutory remittances to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Manage accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and senior accounting staff while supporting their ongoing development.
  • Improve financial reporting through automation, standardized processes, and meaningful dashboards.
  • Monitor cash flow, treasury activities, investments, and operating credit facilities.
  • Coordinate annual audits, regulatory reporting, tax filings, and compliance requirements.
  • Oversee capital asset accounting and monitor project spending against approved budgets.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to support fundraising, reserve funds, and donor reporting.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to financial systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Support cross-functional projects that strengthen financial operations and organizational effectiveness.
Requirements:
  • CPA designation required.
  • University degree in Accounting or a related discipline.
  • Progressive accounting leadership experience, including managing a finance team.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards, CRA requirements, and financial reporting.

  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Experience in not‑for‑profit organizations, and/or fund accounting is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Self‑motivated with a continuous improvement mindset and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Remuneration:
  • Base salary: $120,000 - $140,000.
  • Competitive benefits package.
