Job description

At Treewalk, you’ll be the finance engine behind growing private companies: tight month-end closes, management reporting that actually gets read, forecasts leaders can steer by, and systems and controls built to scale. You’ll own the internal finance function for a portfolio of clients from a broad range of industries. Many engagements will tap you as a hands‑on fractional controller and trusted advisor to owners and leadership teams; others will lean on you to build finance processes from the ground up. Either way, every file is yours to run.

Deadlines are real; overtime isn’t a lifestyle. We staff sensibly, treat extra hours as the rare exception, and back that up with true schedule autonomy and remote flexibility—so your evenings stay yours.

If you’ve built your foundation in public accounting or run the close as a controller in industry, and you’re ready to trade 70‑hour busy‑season marathons for high‑impact work, tangible ownership, and genuine balance, then we would love to hear from you.

How You’ll Create Impact Day-to-Day
  • Own the close – Run full‑cycle accounting and month‑end close for your client files, review the team’s work, and deliver clean, reconciled books on a timeline leaders can count on.
  • Keep leadership laser‑focused – Prepare monthly internal management packages and variance reports against budgets and forecasts, translating the findings into clear, action‑ready recommendations.
  • Shape the roadmap – Build annual budgets, rolling forecasts, and cash‑flow models, aligning owners around targets that push the business—without breaking it.
  • Turn data into insight – Create and maintain dashboards and KPI reporting that spotlight trends, margins, and red flags before anyone else sees them.
  • Build the foundation – Design and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls across key cycles so the finance function scales with the business.
  • Make systems work harder – Lead ERP implementations, clean‑ups, and process improvements, finding automation opportunities that cut manual effort.
  • Keep everything compliant – Oversee payroll, sales tax, and other government and regulatory filings so nothing slips through the cracks.
  • Make year‑end painless – Prepare airtight year‑end working papers and support, and quarterback conversations with external accountants, auditors, and tax advisors.

Result: clients see you as the steady, trusted partner who keeps their operations running on accurate numbers—while you build mastery across industries without the grind of traditional public practice.

Who We Are

Treewalk is Vancouver‑born, scaling nationwide, and obsessed with turning financial complexity into clarity. From owner‑managed private companies to TSX‑V, CSE, NASDAQ, and OTC issuers, we give clients the finance and accounting expertise to run their businesses with confidence—so they can focus on growth.

But labels like “accounting firm” don’t capture our DNA. Picture a tech startup powered by CPAs:

  • Holacracy over hierarchy – Ideas outrank titles, and ownership lives on every desk.
  • Industry‑agnostic curiosity – From construction and manufacturing to biotech and next‑gen retail, if it’s innovative, we’re already in it—or will be tomorrow.
  • Growth at warp speed – One of Canada’s fastest‑rising advisory practices, we set audacious goals, then sprint past them.
  • Training ground for tomorrow’s CFOs – Whether you’re two years post‑designation or a seasoned controller, Treewalk is where accountants level‑up for industry roles and strategic finance leadership.
The Values That Power Us

Mastery: We hunt knowledge relentlessly and build expertise into every engagement.

Support: No one goes it alone—collaboration is our default setting.

Ownership: We celebrate wins and own slip‑ups with equal conviction.

Kaizen: Continuous improvement isn’t a buzzword; it’s our daily operating system.

Our ideal candidate...
  • CPA designation required.
  • Significant controllership and/or public accounting experience - ideally supporting private, owner‑managed, or growth‑stage companies.
  • Assurance experience at a public accounting firm is an asset.
  • After the base experience requirements are met, we hire first and foremost, strong analytical and problem solvers.
  • Relationship builder – You maintain professional relationships with clients and team members alike with open and effective communication.
  • You take pride in making sure everything is correct; account balances that do not reconcile make you crazy. You find joy in solving that unsolvable problem.

Please mention these bonus skills if you have them

  • ERP systems experience (NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage)
  • Construction industry experience
  • FP&A or financial modelling experience
