Job summary

Treewalk Accounting is seeking a senior controller to lead the finance function for a portfolio of private companies. You’ll run full-cycle accounting, manage month‑end closes, and deliver clean books with strategic insights. Your role blends ownership with hands‑on execution across budgets, forecasts, and dashboards.

You’ll partner with owners and leadership, shaping policies, controls, and processes to scale finance while maintaining work‑life balance and flexible, remote-friendly scheduling.

Qualifications

• CPA designation required.

• Assurance experience at a public accounting firm is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Own the close – Run full-cycle accounting and month-end close for client files, review work, deliver reconciled books on deadline.
• Prepare monthly internal management packages and variance reports against budgets/forecasts; translate into actionable recommendations.
• Build budgets, rolling forecasts, and cash-flow models guiding owner decisions.
• Create dashboards and KPI reporting to highlight trends, margins, and red flags.
• Design and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls for scalability.
• Lead ERP implementations, clean-ups, and process improvements; drive automation.
• Oversee payroll, sales tax, and regulatory filings to ensure compliance.
• Prepare year-end working papers and coordinate with external accountants.

You’ll own the internal finance function for a portfolio of clients from a broad range of industries. Many engagements will tap you as a hands‑on fractional controller and trusted advisor to owners and leadership teams; others will lean on you to build finance processes from the ground up. Either way, every file is yours to run.

How You’ll Create Impact Day‑to‑Day

• Build the foundation – Design and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls across key cycles so the finance function scales with the business.
• Make systems work harder – Lead ERP implementations, clean‑ups, and process improvements, finding automation opportunities that cut manual effort.
• Keep everything compliant – Oversee payroll, sales tax, and other government and regulatory filings so nothing slips through the cracks.
• Make year‑end painless – Prepare airtight year‑end working papers and support, and quarterback conversations with external accountants, auditors, and tax advisors.

Requirements

• CPA designation required.
• Significant controllership and/or public accounting experience - ideally supporting private, owner‑managed, or growth‑stage companies.
• Assurance experience at a public accounting firm is an asset.
