Position Overview

This accelerated Personal Support Worker program provides adult students the opportunity to earn their PSW certification over the course of a single semester. Limestone DSB runs two separate cohorts of the PSW program each school year with a group starting in September and a second group starting in February. The Personal Support Worker program consists of theory, lab instruction, a supervised placement as well as unsupervised placements with students working with PSW preceptors in both Long Term Care and Community placements. The teacher of the program is responsible for delivering curriculum, supervising placements and ensuring that students meet the requirements of the PSW certification.

Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Delivering secondary credits including TPJ 3C (Health Care Gr. 11), TPJ 4C (Health Care Gr. 12), TOJ 4C (Child Development & Gerontology Gr. 12) and Co-Op credits connect to placements.
  • Ensuring that students have the skills and knowledge laid out in the CESBA requirements for PSW programs.
  • Prepare students for and proctor the CESBA Provincial PSW Certification exam.
  • Support the organization of student placements for unsupervised placements and problem solve any issues that arise in these placements.
  • Monitor students on unsupervised placements and maintain regular communication with student and preceptor.
  • Participate in the vetting of candidates for placement in the program.
  • Participate in the Quality Assurance process for the PSW Program.
  • Implementing Individual Education Plans to ensure students can access the learning.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with Program partners - Clinical Instructors, Staff at John Parrot Centre, Program Coordinator and Administration.
  • Report student achievement using secondary reporting processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion)
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as oral and written communication skills to communicate effectively with students, school administration, school staff and community partners
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Professional experience in a related field outside of the classroom, specifically in nursing and healthcare
  • Demonstrated growth mindset that all students can learn and succeed
  • Demonstrated ability to manage one’s own emotions and those of others
  • Demonstrated reflective learner and practitioner
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Experience working with diverse student populations with varying needs and strengths, in particular adult students

  • Demonstrated involvement in broader school community outside of the classroom
