Job summary

Job description

  • Under general supervision, performs skilled trades work at the journeyperson level in one or more areas such as machining, fitting, metal fabrication, vehicle maintenance, oil burner systems, heating systems, stationary engineering, or refrigeration and air conditioning.
  • Installs, operates, maintains, and repairs building systems and equipment, including heating, refrigeration, and mechanical systems. Operates shop equipment such as metal turning lathes and related tools as required.
  • Uses sound judgment and troubleshooting techniques to identify issues in equipment and systems, and completes repairs or adjustments to restore functionality. Maintains vehicles and equipment with internal combustion engines.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, including time and materials used. Ensures tools, equipment, and supplies are properly maintained and organized. Identifies and communicates repair needs or concerns to the supervisor.
  • Follows established safety procedures and contributes to a safe and respectful working environment.
Experience

This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to several years of journeyperson-level experience in the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and related systems, preferably within a complex or institutional environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the repair and maintenance of HVAC and related mechanical systems.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment and system issues using sound judgment, troubleshooting techniques, and a range of technical skills.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and carry out work assignments effectively under general supervision.
  • Ability to use tools, materials, and equipment efficiently and responsibly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive, respectful working relationships with a wide range of individuals, including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to safely perform a range of physical tasks associated with trades work, including working with tools, equipment, and materials in various environments.
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia driver’s license (or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of sports and athletic equipment is an asset.
