Job description

Consultant Psychiatrist & Deputy Medical Director

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Psychiatrist and Deputy Medical Director to work at Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke. The role involves providing senior medical cover on Nash Ward, a 12-bed PICU service for men, or Sandford Ward, a 16-bed Female acute service.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing and maintaining the care of all ward inpatients as required. They will also be responsible for auditing medical services to ensure high quality in accordance with GMC standards and other professional guidelines.

Your expertise will drive life-changing treatments, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists.

This role offers the opportunity to progress to Medical Director through our management schemes.

Main duties of the job

Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke has a 'Good' CQC rating and provides emergency admission services for men and women, along with pathways for rehabilitation, including a specialist service for personality disorder for up to 71 patients.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician with overall medical responsibility for patient treatment, liaising closely with the multidisciplinary team.

They are expected to act as a positive role model, maintaining a professional and supportive attitude towards patients, families, visitors, and staff.

Job responsibilities

  • Lead in providing high-quality care on Nash or Sandford Ward
  • Act as a role model, demonstrating professionalism and positivity
  • Take responsibility for patient treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess referrals and conduct mental state examinations
  • Perform investigations, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews, and audits
  • Implement risk assessments and manage clinical governance
  • Supervise reports for tribunals and hearings
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfers and leave
  • Communicate regularly with senior management and staff
  • Participate in academic meetings and maintain professional development
  • Contribute to on-call duties (1 : 6 rota)
