Job summary

WSP is seeking an experienced Construction Supervisor – Substation & Transmission Line to provide field engineering support for high-voltage substation and transmission line projects in Canada. • Diploma or degree in Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum 10–15 years of relevant construction experience, with field experience on high-voltage substations and/or overhead transmission line projects.
• Demonstrated experience with higher-voltage substation and transmission infrastructure preferred.
• Strong field experience with substation earthworks and grading, reinforced concrete foundations, rebar and concrete construction, anchor bolts and embeds, underground duct banks and trenches, structural steel erection, and ability to read IFC civil, structural and electrical drawings, specs, vendor drawings and construction details.
• Practical knowledge of ITPs, Hold Points, Witness Points, NCRs, RFIs, field change processes and Contractor QA/QC documentation.
• Ability to escalate field conditions or construction deviations to a Professional Engineer when needed.

Responsibilities

• Serve as WSP’s primary on-site field representative for substation and transmission line construction activities.
• Perform and document engineering field observations against IFC drawings, specifications, approved technical documentation and ITPs, including civil/structural works, structural steel erection and major equipment installations.
• Review contractor look-ahead schedules and ITP notifications and coordinate WSP attendance at Hold/Witness Points.
• Identify field conditions, deviations or non-conformances requiring engineering assessment and coordinate with the appropriate engineer/EOR.
• Review contractor QA/QC records, test results, surveys and other construction documentation for the engineering field record.
• Maintain field records, including observation reports, photographs, Hold/Witness Point records and outstanding issues.
• Track NCRs and engineering dispositions through closure and support as-built documentation.
• Participate in construction coordination meetings and communicate significant field issues to the Project Manager and EOR team.
• Comply with health and safety requirements from WSP, Owner and project.

WSP is seeking an experienced Construction Supervisor – Substation & Transmission Line to provide field-based engineering and construction support for high-voltage substation and transmission line projects for a 12 to 15month Contract position.

The successful candidate will serve as WSP’s primary field representative, providing experienced technical observation of construction activities and maintaining a direct interface between field conditions and WSP’s Engineer of Record (EOR) team.

The role will focus on civil and structural construction activities for the station and transmission line structures, while also supporting selected electrical equipment installation activities.

The Construction Supervisor will document construction conditions, participate in designated Hold and Witness Points, identify conditions or deviations requiring engineering review, and maintain field records supporting the EOR’s engineering assessment and preparation of Record Documentation.

The role does not replace the Contractor’s responsibility for construction execution, means and methods, QA/QC, inspection, testing, workmanship or compliance with the Contract Documents.

Your Impact

• Serve as WSP’s primary on-site field representative for substation and transmission line construction activities.
• Perform and document engineering field observations against applicable IFC drawings, specifications, approved technical documentation and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), including civil/structural works, structural steel erection and major equipment installations.
• Review Contractor look-ahead schedules and ITP notifications and coordinate WSP attendance at designated engineering Hold/Witness Points.
• Identify field conditions, deviations or non-conformances requiring engineering assessment and promptly coordinate with the appropriate WSP discipline engineer/EOR.
• Review relevant Contractor QA/QC records, test results, surveys and other construction documentation required to support the engineering field record.
• Maintain clear and traceable field records, including observation reports, photographs, Hold/Witness Point records and outstanding engineering issues.
• Track technical issues, NCRs and engineering dispositions through closure and support preparation and verification of as-built and Record Documentation.
• Participate in construction coordination meetings and communicate significant field issues to the WSP Project Manager and EOR team.
• Comply with applicable WSP, Owner and project health and safety requirements.

• Diploma or degree in Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Minimum 10–15 years of relevant construction experience, with significant field experience on high-voltage substations and/or overhead transmission line projects.
• Demonstrated experience with higher-voltage substation and transmission infrastructure preferred.
• Strong field experience with:
• Substation earthworks and grading;
• Reinforced concrete foundations;
• Rebar and concrete construction;
• Anchor bolts and embeds;
• Underground duct banks and trenches;
• Structural steel erection; and
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret IFC civil, structural and electrical drawings, technical specifications, vendor drawings and construction details.
• Practical knowledge of Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), Hold Points, Witness Points, NCRs, RFIs, field change processes and Contractor QA/QC documentation.
• Ability to recognize when field conditions or construction deviations require escalation to a Professional Engineer rather than field-level resolution.
• Strong understanding of the distinction between Contractor QA/QC, Owner construction surveillance and EOR engineering field observation.
• Experience maintaining high-quality construction field records suitable for supporting as-built and Record Documentation.
• Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining close communication with a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Preferred Experience

• Previous experience as a Construction Supervisor, Resident Engineering Representative, Civil/Structural Inspector, Owner’s Engineer Field Representative or EOR Field Representative on utility infrastructure projects.
• Combined experience with both high-voltage substations and overhead transmission lines.
• Experience with utility/EPC substation construction involving transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, bus structures, control buildings/E-Houses and associated foundations.
• Experience with drilled transmission line foundations, reinforcement cages, concrete placement and structure erection.
• Familiarity with applicable CSA, IEEE, ACI, CISC and utility-specific construction requirements, as relevant to the assigned work.
• Experience working on multidisciplinary EPC transmission projects.

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT:$48.10 to $63.70/hour
MB & ON:$43.90 to $60.40/hour
NB, NL, NS, PEI & QC:$43.40 to $57.70/hour
