Job summary

Ontario NDP is seeking a Constituency Assistant to support MPP Chandra Pasma in Ottawa West-Nepean. This is a full-time, permanent replacement position (32.5 hours/week) based in the Constituency Office.

The role involves organizing events, responding to constituents, gathering research, and improving media presence while coordinating with caucus communications to promote the MPP’s visibility in the riding.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the NDP and the Canadian labour movement; public affairs familiarity.
  • Equity and diversity frameworks applied to duties.
  • Ability to write articles and reports, meet deadlines, maintain organized records.
  • Ability to advocate effectively for constituents.
  • Excellent computer skills including Twitter, Facebook, Mailchimp, etc.
  • Familiarity with constituency, portfolio areas and key stakeholder groups.
  • Proficiency in English is essential; French is an asset.
  • Experience in NDP organizations and community organizing is an asset.
  • Knowledge and rapport with local riding and community members is preferred.
  • Proficiency in social media is required.

Responsibilities

  • Organize events, hearings, meetings, and press conferences.
  • Respond to constituent questions and concerns.
  • Prepare and compile research material for communicating with constituents and organizations.
  • Respond to requests for research or information from constituents.
  • Monitor local media and assist with weekly columns, op-eds, and media releases.
  • Develop social media presence and manage online identity for the MPP; assist with outreach.
  • Stay informed on policy areas and liaise with interest groups.
  • Handle enquiries, solve problems, and advocate for constituents (casework).
  • Contact constituents by phone, mail, and in person.
  • Engage with senior government personnel and external organizations.
  • Prepare all documentation related to casework.
  • Travel throughout the riding for outreach, casework, and event planning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Member.

Job description

Job: Constituency Assistant

Status: Full-time, Permanent (32.5 hours/week)

Department/Location: MPP Chandra Pasma, Ottawa West-Nepean (Constituency Office)

Salary: $76,277.30/year

Vacancy Status: Replacement

Objectives: To assist the Member by completing assigned casework and outreach duties.

Responsible to the Member for
  • Organizing events, hearings, meetings, and press conferences.
  • Responding to constituent questions and concerns.
  • Preparing, gathering, maintaining, and compiling research material as requested by Member to aid in communicating with constituents and organizations in the constituency.
  • Responding to requests for research or information from the MPP’s constituents.
  • Monitor local media to ensure a strong media presence for the Member. May include preparing weekly columns, drafting op-eds, standard media releases and arranging stand‑up interviews.
  • Work with the MPP and caucus communications department to develop a strong social media presence and manage online social media to increase MPP’s visual identity; and assist with outreach and engagement to help promote awareness of the MPP in the riding.
  • Keeping informed in all policy areas assigned by Member and liaising with interest groups within the constituency.
  • Dealing with enquiries and solving problems and advocating for constituents (casework).
  • Contacting and responding to constituents by telephone, writing and in person.
  • Contacting senior government personnel, officials from outside organizations, and local government.
  • Preparing all documentation related to casework.
  • Travel throughout the Riding to perform outreach, casework and event planning.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Member.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the NDP and the Canadian labour movement, Canadian government, Ontario government and public affairs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Equity and Diversity frameworks and considerations as it applies to the duties of the position.
  • Ability to write articles and reports, to meet deadlines, produce accurate work and maintain organized records.
  • Ability to advocate effectively on behalf of the Member’s constituents.
  • Excellent computer skills required including Twitter, Facebook, Mailchimp, etc.
  • Familiarity with members’ constituency and portfolio areas and key stakeholder groups in the riding is essential.
  • Proficiency in English is essential.
  • Proficiency in French (reading, speaking and writing) is considered an asset.
  • Experience in NDP organizations and community organizing is an asset.
  • Knowledge and existing rapport with local riding and community members is preferred.
  • Proficiency in social media is required.
