Senior Legal Counsel - Minerals

This is a permanent position based in Montreal, QC.

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to work closely with the General Counsel, Minerals, and the Minerals product group. The role involves providing strategic legal support to the Iron Ore Company of Canada, the Diavik diamond mine, and US Borates.

Reporting to the General Counsel, Minerals, and working within a challenging and dynamic legal environment, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing strategic advice on a wide range of legal issues, including commercial contracts, environmental matters, and disputes, supporting the Iron Ore Company of Canada, Diavik diamond mine, and US Borates;
  • Contributing to the management of major legal and business risks;
  • Taking a leadership role within the legal, governance, and corporate affairs functions;
  • Ensuring compliance with the highest standards to protect and enhance Rio Tinto's reputation.

Your contributions

  • A commitment to safety for yourself and your team;
  • Experience in non-OECD jurisdictions and managing complex issues involving governments and multiple stakeholders;
  • Experience supporting and leading negotiations and complex transactions;
  • Strong background in corporate/commercial law, including complex contracts, disputes, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures;
  • Proven technical and analytical skills with a track record of proactive, creative problem-solving;
  • Experience managing relationships with external advisors and ensuring cost-effective services;
  • The ability to work seamlessly across organizational and geographic boundaries;
  • Experience leveraging AI for legal support and an interest in broader AI applications;
  • Fluency in French and English, both written and spoken, with collaboration often involving external teams outside Quebec;
  • Willingness to travel as needed to support ongoing projects.
