Job summary

Millar Western Forest Products Limited seeks a CBM Specialist to improve equipment reliability, maximize asset performance and support predictive maintenance at the Whitecourt pulp operation. You will monitor critical equipment health and proactively prevent failures by collaborating with operations, maintenance, engineering and technical services teams.

The ideal candidate will hold a Journeyperson certificate in Mechanical or Electrical, or a Degree in Mechanical Engineering, plus ISO

Qualifications

• Journeyperson trade certificate in mechanical or electrical discipline or a mechanical engineering degree.
• ISO Vibration Analysis Category II certification or willingness to obtain it.
• Experience with rotating equipment, balancing and lubrication programs.

Responsibilities

• Monitor asset condition and determine maintenance needs to prevent failures.
• Analyze vibration, thermography, ultrasonic and lubrication data to assess health.
• Conduct RCA investigations and recommend corrective actions.
• Develop and maintain CBM programs, including routes and databases.
• Collaborate with maintenance, engineering and operations to prioritize CBM work.
• Make repair/replacement recommendations based on data and condition.
• Maintain CBM databases and prepare asset health reports.
• Develop standards for alignment, balancing and lubrication best practices.

Job description

Millar Western’s Whitecourt Pulp Division is seeking a Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) Specialist who will play a key role in improving equipment reliability, maximizing asset performance, and supporting predictive maintenance initiatives across our operation. Working as an integral member of the Maintenance Team and reporting to the Mechanical Superintendent, you will collaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, and technical services teams to monitor critical equipment health and proactively prevent failures.

Responsibilities Include:

• Monitoring critical asset condition and determining when maintenance should be performed to prevent equipment failures and performance losses.
• Analyzing vibration, thermography, ultrasonic, acoustic, lubrication, and operational process data to assess equipment health and identify emerging issues.
• Conducting Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations and recommending corrective actions for repetitive and significant equipment failures.
• Developing and maintaining condition monitoring programs, including vibration routes, lubrication standards, and asset health databases.
• Collaborating with maintenance planners, superintendents, engineers, and equipment owners to prioritize and execute CBM-related work.
• Making equipment repair, maintenance, and replacement recommendations based on data analysis and equipment condition assessments.
• Maintaining CBM databases, documenting findings and recommendations in SAP, and preparing asset health reports.
• Developing standards for precision alignment, balancing, and lubrication best practices.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have a Journeyperson Trade Certificate in a Mechanical or Electrical discipline with at least three years of related experience, or a Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Candidates should have ISO Vibration Analysis Category II certification or a willingness to obtain it. Additional certification or training in oil analysis, thermography, ultrasound, or other predictive maintenance technologies is an asset.

The ideal candidate will have experience with rotating equipment condition monitoring, balancing, lubrication programs, and troubleshooting equipment such as compressors, turbines, gearboxes, pumps, blowers, chillers, and motors. Experience using Emerson CSI 2140 vibration analyzers and associated analysis software, or similar condition monitoring technology, is preferred.

Experience with SAP or other CMMS systems, Root Cause Analysis methodologies, and reliability tools such as FMEA and Fault Tree Analysis is highly desirable. Strong analytical, communication, report writing, and stakeholder engagement skills, combined with advanced Microsoft Office proficiency, will be critical to success in this role.
