Job summary

School District #38 (Richmond) seeks a Computer Systems Technologist I I to maintain the district's data center, networks, and computing systems. You will support network hardware/software, VOIP, firewalls, video systems, and AV technologies while collaborating with technology, staff, and administrators.

You will mentor colleagues, participate in cybersecurity efforts, and help plan capacity and system design. A Diploma and seven years of relevant experience are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Computer Information Systems Technology or related subjects and seven years of relevant experience (including four years in supervision).
  • Cisco, Palo Alto and Network+ certifications or equivalent are assets.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, subnetting, VLANs, and network cable installations.
  • Experience with Cisco Call Manager, Meraki Dashboard, and Palo Alto Panorama, plus PA systems.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, test, and support Local and Wide Area Network systems.
  • Maintain and configure servers, networks, video systems, surveillance, and digital signage.
  • Operate and maintain PA and other audio systems.
  • Prepare technical documentation of procedures and projects as required.
  • Lead small project teams and mentor other technology staff.

Computer Systems Technologist I I – Data Center & Network Systems Technician

STATEMENT OF JOB PURPOSE

The Network Systems Technician plays a vital role in maintaining the security, stability, and optimal performance of the district’s data infrastructure, networks, and computing systems. The technician provides support for network hardware and software, including the installation, configuration, maintenance, repair, and upgrade of wireless systems, public address (PA) and audio-visual (AV) technologies, VOIP telephony, switching, routing, and firewalls. The role requires close collaboration with the Learning and Business Technology Teams, school staff, and district personnel, as well as mentoring colleagues to ensure a secure and efficient computing environment that supports both educational and administrative functions.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(This is not an exhaustive list of the duties to be performed.) In addition to all the duties and responsibilities of the Data Center & Network Systems Technician:

  • Plans, designs, tests, maintains and supports computer systems, Local and Wide Area Network systems, etc.
  • Maintains and configures servers, network, complex video systems, video surveillance, and digital signage.
  • Maintains and configures PA and other audio systems.
  • Maintains an inventory of the technology assets used in the district.
  • Completes written records related to work performed and installations.
  • Consults, tests, and makes recommendations for new equipment, as required.
  • Maintains Palo Alto firewalls including QOS, security polices, and NAT policies via Panorama management software.
  • Collaborates and liaises with other teams regarding projects and tasks, such as Cybersecurity, Management Information Services and Client Services.
  • Monitors network and system activities and makes changes to optimize performance.Recommends information technology strategies, policy, standards, procedures and security. Participates in capacity planning and system design.
  • Liaises with school administrators, site contacts and outside agencies.
  • Provides advice, in-service workshops, training and assistance to users and technical staff regarding the operation of equipment, the use of applications, and other issues.Prepares technical documentation of operational procedures.
  • Acts as project leader and supervises the work of a small group of staff engaged in tasks related to assigned projects.
  • Supports team leader with cybersecurity, data center and network related training, leadership, and mentoring to other technology staff.
  • Continuously upgrades skills and knowledge of server and network infrastructure and cybersecurity systems and technologies, including attending training sessions and conferences to stay current with best practices in supporting clients with technical issues.
  • Performs duties in compliance with health and safety procedures and regulations.
  • Embraces and communicates cyber security best-practices.
  • Maintains and operates a district vehicle.
  • Performs other job-related duties of comparable importance, difficulty and responsibility as necessary.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, abilities and skills)
  • Grade 12 or equivalent plus a Diploma in Computer Information Systems Technology or related subjects from a recognized institution of technology plus seven (7) years relevant work experience including four (4) years' service work including project supervision experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Cisco Systems, Palo Alto and Network+ certifications or equivalent is an asset.
  • Knowledge of network cable installations, TCP/IP, subnetting and VLANs.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Apple and/or Windows workstation operating systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of established computer systems, current network operating systems and current structural network design practices.
  • Experience managing Cisco Call manager, Meraki Dashboard, Cisco Unity Messaging, Valcom PA systems, and Palo Alto Panorama.
  • Ability to organize workload, work under periodic pressure and deadlines and complete projects and assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of electrical tools and devices.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving materials, equipment and supplies.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence.

This is a 40 hr/week position that is on-site, with no remote working option. The successful employee will be eligible for a comprehensive benefits package including extended health, dental care, municipal pension plan, paid leave and more. This is a unionized position with CUPE local 716
