Job summary

Regent Park CHC is seeking a Community Engagement Worker to support implementation of its engagement framework and build trusted relationships with community members, groups and partners in Toronto. The role requires regular outreach, consultation and coordination of advisory groups to promote meaningful participation in health planning and programs.

The CEW will work evenings/weekends as needed, strengthen leadership capacity, and connect residents with RPCHC resources.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in community development, social work, health promotion, public health or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three years in community engagement/outreach with diverse, equity-deserving communities.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships and facilitate inclusive participation.
  • Knowledge of health equity and social determinants of health with trauma-informed approaches.
  • Experience supporting advisory groups and volunteers is an asset.
  • Strong communication, organizational and data collection skills with reporting ability.

Salary Range: $58,426.00 To $70,387.00 Annually

We are a dynamic community-based health centre promoting social justice and health equity in the Regent Park neighbourhood and Downtown East area of Toronto. We operate out of several locations and provide a wide variety of services including: primary health care, chiropody, physiotherapy, health promotion, social work, community health, newcomer services, harm reduction and homeless programs, addiction and recovery services, Pathways to Education, infant and child development programs, parenting programs, and youth employment services.

Community Engagement Worker
Full-time Permanent Position, 35 hours per week
Hourly Range: $32.10 - $38.67 plus benefits and HOOPP Pension
Position Summary

The Community Engagement Worker (CEW) supports the implementation of RPCHC’s community engagement framework and initiatives. The CEW builds trusted relationships with community members, clients, resident groups, community leaders, partners, volunteers and RPCHC programs to strengthen meaningful participation in service planning, community initiatives and issues affecting health and well-being.

The CEW conducts outreach and consultation, facilitates community participation, supports advisory structures, builds community leadership and capacity, and connects community members with relevant resources and services. The CEW works collaboratively across RPCHC to ensure engagement is equitable, culturally safe, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, accessible and responsive to community needs.

Regular work in community settings is required, including occasional evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities Include:
Community Engagement and Outreach
  • Implement community engagement activities in alignment with RPCHC’s engagement framework and priorities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community members, resident groups, grassroots organizations, community leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct outreach to increase awareness of RPCHC programs, services, resources and opportunities for participation, using accessible approaches that engage diverse and equity-deserving communities and reduce barriers to participation.
  • Represent RPCHC at community events, meetings, networks and collaborative initiatives.
  • Identify and communicate emerging community needs, priorities, concerns and opportunities.
Community Participation and Capacity Building
  • Plan and facilitate accessible community consultations, focus groups, listening sessions, forums, workshops and other engagement activities.
  • Gather and communicate community perspectives, priorities and feedback and create opportunities for community members to participate in or co-design programs, services and initiatives.
  • Coordinate community and client advisory groups, including recruitment, orientation, facilitation, documentation and ongoing engagement.
  • Support community leadership, peer leadership, skills development and community-led initiatives.
  • Build collaborative relationships with community organizations, service providers, local stakeholders and RPCHC programs to strengthen participation, improve access and address social determinants of health.
Volunteer Engagement and Support
  • Serve as a key organizational contact for volunteer engagement and support communication between volunteers, program staff and People & Culture.
  • Coordinate volunteer recruitment, placement, onboarding, orientation, training, recognition and offboarding in collaboration with People & Culture and program teams.
  • Support effective volunteer engagement by matching volunteers to opportunities and assisting program staff with volunteer involvement.
  • Maintain volunteer records and monitor participation, outcomes and compliance with organizational policies and volunteer program requirements.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting
  • Maintain accurate records of outreach, consultations, partnerships, volunteer activities and community engagement initiatives.
  • Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative information to track participation, reach, feedback, emerging priorities and outcomes.
  • Contribute to evaluation, continuous improvement, organizational reporting and funding reports.
Program and Organizational Support
  • Coordinate community meetings, events, workshops, consultations and special projects and prepare related materials and documentation.
  • Collaborate with staff across RPCHC, maintain regular communication with the Community Engagement Coordinator and represent the organization at community activities as assigned.
  • Participate in meetings, committees and professional development and promote health equity, inclusion, confidentiality and compliance with organizational policies and relevant legislation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Post-secondary education in community development, social work, health promotion, public health, community services or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three years of experience in community engagement, outreach, community development, health promotion or a related field, including experience working with diverse, marginalized, underserved and equity-deserving communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships, facilitate consultations and group discussions, and create inclusive opportunities for meaningful community participation.
  • Knowledge of community engagement, community development, health equity and social determinants of health, with an understanding of trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, culturally safe and equity-centred approaches.
  • Experience supporting advisory groups, peer leaders, volunteers or community-led initiatives; volunteer program coordination experience is an asset.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, organizational, documentation, data collection and reporting skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital engagement tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently and collaboratively, exercise sound judgment, and adapt to changing community needs.
  • Experience working in Regent Park, Moss Park, St. James Town and surrounding communities, including knowledge of issues affecting residents. A second language relevant to the communities served is an asset.
  • Commitment to community voice, health equity, social justice and meaningful participation, with the ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, in community-based settings.
