Job description

YOU NEVER met A PROBLEM YOU COULDN’T SOLVE
The Opportunity

You know that being a great communicator is so much more than being an excellent writer (which you are) or knowing your way around the web, social media and print (which you do); it’s about connecting with your audience and making them feel understood. You truly believe that good communications help employees feel empowered, customers feel valued, and businesses succeed. You also know that strong strategies are the key to success—and your communications plans are a thing of beauty. You’re a trusted advisor, a pro at identifying the business need or strategic opportunity, and you aren’t afraid to propose new solutions or innovative approaches. We love that about you.

A Place to Belong

AMA is more than a workplace; it’s a family. Together, we help protect the things that matter most to our more than one-million members—everything from roadside safety to retail savings, food security to childhood well‑being. And with operations that span automotive, registries, travel, insurance and more, the opportunities to grow with us are almost limitless! For us, curiosity fuels innovation. We value people who are eager to explore new ideas and who are comfortable putting emerging technologies into practice. We see experience with AI‑powered tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and similar platforms as a real plus - especially when it’s used to work smarter, increase efficiency, and find better ways to get things done_._

Building on a century of proud service in Alberta communities, we’re passionate about making a meaningful difference in the places where we live and work. And that all begins with our people. As part of the AMA team, you’ll enjoy:

  • Competitive salary and flexible benefits, with five packages to choose from and up to $3,000 in health and wellness spending accounts.
  • Employer-paid retirement savings program, including 5% AMA contribution and 5% matching.
  • Employee-exclusive discounts on travel, insurance, memberships, driver education, registry services, and more.
  • Free travel medical insurance for you and your immediate family.
  • Ongoing professional development, with unlimited learning opportunities, full Udemy access, and dedicated time for personal growth.
  • Paid vacation and personal days, including three weeks of vacation to start, a Me Day, a Volunteer Day, and the option to purchase additional vacation time.
  • Flexible work models that make sense for your lifestyle, including our four-day work week option: Alongside our other work models, this option gives you another way to harmonize work and life in a way that’s personally meaningful and aligned with your role. Available to eligible fully in-office and fully remote roles, with tailored guidelines to fit department‑specific needs. Requires a 12-month commitment; eligible employees can opt in or opt out annually during the benefit renewal period.
Who You Are
  • You ‘re a master of strategy, turning client briefs into comprehensive plans that leave nothing to chance.
  • You’ve got the heart, vision and drive of an entrepreneur and are always looking for new ways to advance company objectives.
  • You’re part storyteller, part translator, part problem-solver. It’s about finding the narrative that truly connects with your audience and makes their lives easier.
  • You’re a skilled consultant who understands client and customer needs. Active listening comes as naturally as breathing.
  • You work just as well on your own as you do in a team.
  • Not only are you comfortable with change, you embrace it. And you like to help others through it too.
  • You not only stay on top of industry trends, developments and content best practices but recognize and embrace the opportunities inherent in advancements like AI.
How You’ll Make an Impact
  • Consult with business clients to understand strategic objectives and business challenges, then advise on communications solutions.
  • Develop and execute robust, strategic and measurable communications plans that achieve organizational goals.
  • Measure, analyze and report on the effectiveness of communications and projects.
  • Develop key messages and ensure they’re reflected in all deliverables.
  • Act as an internal consultant, responsible for developing and maintaining client relationships and providing strategic solutions to business problems.
  • Work closely with peers within business units and departments to ensure communication initiatives are aligned.
  • Create and edit content in a voice that reflects our brand, and is consistent with the Canadian Press Style Guide, the AMA Style Guide, and our editorial guidelines.
  • Support various company‑wide communications channels, including social media, newsroom, online and print.
  • Identify opportunities to share strategic initiatives and outcomes with AMA staff.
  • Help ensure a consistent member and employee experience online and offline through integration between communications channels.
What You Bring to the Table
  • Business is booming and we need your experience as a communications pro to keep the lines of communication open.
  • You will have solid experience in planning, a knack for problem solving and a gift for storytelling.
  • You have at least six (6) years of experience in a communications role.
  • You have a post‑secondary degree, diploma or certificate in communications or public relations.
  • You excel at planning with demonstrated experience developing, implementing and evaluating communication plans.
  • You’re a strong project manager, with a track record of guiding successful campaigns and plans.
  • You’ll get bonus points if you have professional experience with social media. Accreditation from CPRS or IABC would also put you at the head of the class.
  • You have a history of strong research skills, superior writing, and the ability to produce flawless communications in plain language that meet audience needs.

As this is a communications role, we request that candidates include a cover letter. Your letter will provide us with an initial insight into your writing skills, so we encourage you to take care in crafting a polished and thoughtful letter sharing your interest in joining AMA.
