Job summary

Environmental Defence Canada (EDC) is seeking a Communications Manager to lead strategic communications across digital and traditional channels. Based in Toronto or Ottawa, this hybrid, permanent full-time role (35 hours/week) reports to the Director of Communications and offers a unionized environment with a salary of $80,000.

The successful candidate will develop and execute advocacy-focused communications plans, manage media relations, create compelling content, and collaborate with partners

Qualifications

  • 5+ years as a communications professional, preferably in social change.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute creative communications plans using digital advocacy, media relations, and traditional marketing.
  • Write and edit blogs, website text, press releases, newsletters and social content.
  • Manage development of advertising and promotional materials like social ads and brochures.
  • Develop media relations strategy, pitch interviews and brief spokespeople.
  • Lead social media strategy, content creation and community management.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, coalition partners and suppliers.
  • Assist in managing digital communications tools.
  • Analyze activities and prepare reports to inform future campaigns.

Communications Manager

TITLE:Communications Manager

TERMS: Permanent Full-Time Position (35 hours per week, Monday to Friday)

LOCATION: Toronto or Ottawa

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position is hybrid, with a combination of remote work and 2 days per week required in-office.

REPORTS TO:Director of Communications

SALARY: $80,000

About the Role

Environmental Defence Canada (EDC) is a leading Canadian environmental advocacy organization that works with government, industry and individuals to defend clean water, a safe climate and healthy communities. You will be joining a fast-paced organization with mission-driven and results-oriented team members. EDC is looking for a Communications Manager who can anticipate and meet the needs of a dynamic environment.

Purpose of the Role

The Communications Manager will foster a supportive and collaborative team structure where innovation and strategic thinking is encouraged. EDC’s work is grounded in identifying a theory of change and designing a path that will lead to securing stronger environmental protections. The communications manager will design and deliver effective communications plans that educate and prompt people to take action on our campaigns.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute creative communications plans that use digital advocacy tools, media relations, social media, and traditional marketing to advance issue area goals
  • Write and edit communications materials including blogs, website text, press releases, op-eds, newsletters, social media content, reports
  • Manage the development of advertising and promotional materials such as social media ads, brochures, posters
  • Develop media relations strategy (proactive and rapid response), pitch and coordinate media interviews, train/brief spokespeople, develop relationships with key reporters
  • Social media strategy development, content creation and community management, develop relationships with key influencers
  • Work effectively with colleagues, coalition partners, suppliers
  • Assist in the management of digital communications tools
  • Analyze activities & prepare reports to inform future communications activities
Skills and Experience
  • 5+ years experience as a communications professional, ideally in an area advancing social change
  • Excellent written, verbal and persuasive communication skills; excels at distilling complex subject matter into accessible information others can act upon; strong design eye
  • Proficiency in digital campaigning is a must; using digital tools to advance a campaign/program
  • Demonstrated project management skills including work planning, budget development and tracking, and reporting on outcomes.
  • Knowledge of database programs, communications analytics and management tools (e.g. Google Analytics, Sprout Social, Meltwater), design programs and video/photo editing software (e.g. Canva, CapCut)
  • Ability to think critically and make well-informed, timely decisions
  • Strong background in environmental issues is an asset
