Job summary

Scarborough Arts in Toronto is seeking a Communications Manager to advance the organization's mission by elevating arts and culture in Scarborough, and by developing and executing communications strategies, partnerships, and outreach.

The role focuses on marketing, community engagement, and storytelling to broaden impact among residents, partners, and funders, with oversight of branding, content creation, and events.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Marketing and Communications, Community Arts, or Arts Administration preferred.
  • Experience managing staff, interns, or volunteers is an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a creative storytelling ability.

Responsibilities

  • Marketing: collaborate on strategy, brand execution, and content across channels.
  • Outreach and Evaluation: plan partnerships, support proposals, and report on programs.
  • Admin: participate in meetings and events, with some evenings/weekends as needed.

About Scarborough Arts:

Scarborough Arts is a local arts service organization. We serve as Scarborough's primary cultural engine by brokering high-impact partnerships, providing professional supports, and delivering inclusive arts programming that animates our Borough and its public spaces. We exist to amplify, connect, and animate the most creatively alive place in Toronto.

About the Role:

The Communications Manager at Scarborough Arts plays a key role in promoting the organization's mission by driving awareness of arts and culture in Scarborough as well as developing and executing communications strategies, building community partnerships and engagement, and telling the story of our work to a broad demographic of community members, community partners, and funders.

Key Responsibilities:

60% Marketing

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and other Scarborough Arts staff on the development of marketing and communications strategy and plans, and execution of branding
  • Project manage and ensure delivery of marketing and communications plans, and/or supervise staff and contractors to deliver them; including press releases, monthly newsletters, programs calendar, social media posts, website updates, email monitoring, and other activities/deliverables as required
  • Design and write marketing and communications materials, and/or supervise staff and contractors creating them, in line with strategy and branding
  • Manage staff, contractors and other personnel as assigned, including overseeing their performance and supporting their development and growth

30% Outreach and Evaluation

  • Collaborate with ED and Scarborough Arts staff to create and deliver outreach strategies for specific programs and events, including in-person outreach and accessibility considerations
  • Collaborate with ED and Scarborough Arts staff to plan and implement evaluations for programs and events and develop reports
  • Contribute to prospecting and identification of new partnerships as well as the maintenance of existing partnerships/relationships to maintain and grow collaborative networks
  • Contribute to the creation of funding and partnership proposals by developing communications and outreach plans, as well as overall copywriting and editing
  • Collaborate with the Scarborough Arts internal and/or external development staff to contribute to the maintenance of a robust pipeline of development opportunities.
  • Attend external and community partner events as a representative of Scarborough Arts with the objective of building and strengthening partner relationships

10% Admin

  • Attend company meetings, both in-person and online, and contribute to the day-to-day administrative work of the organization
  • Attend Scarborough Arts Events (some evenings and weekends required) as well as assist with the planning and execution of larger events and activities, as needed
  • Other related duties as assigned
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities / Qualifications:
  1. Self-directed and reliable.
  2. Organized, good attention to detail.
  3. Comfortable working in a flexible, collaborative work environment.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills, enjoys working with people.
  6. Creative skills related to visual and written storytelling. Experience with design and platforms like Canva and Adobe is considered an asset.
  7. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced non-profit environment with competing tight deadlines and priorities.
  8. Respect for diverse people and communities, committed to working towards inclusion and equity.
  9. Experience and/or training in Marketing and Communications, Community Arts, or Arts Administration is preferred.
  10. Experience managing staff, interns, co-op students, and/or volunteers is an asset.
  11. Priority will be given to Scarborough residents or individuals with knowledge and experience working and/or living in the Scarborough community.
