The Alberta Human Rights Commission works with Albertans to promote awareness of, and appreciation for, human rights and diversity. Its overall goal is to develop inclusive communities in which all Albertans can participate in the social, economic, and cultural life of the province without discrimination.

Created by the Government of Alberta, the Commission is an independent commission that reports to the Minister of Justice. It has a two-fold mandate: to foster equality and to reduce discrimination. It fulfills this mandate through the resolution and settlement of human rights complaints; an administratively fair human rights tribunal process, and through education programs, policy development, and collaborative initiatives.

Role Responsibilities

Are you ready to shape public understanding of human rights in Alberta? This role offers a unique opportunity to develop and implement communications that promote human rights, inform Albertans, and highlight the vital programs and services of the Alberta Human Rights Commission.

Reporting to the Director, Communication, Education and Engagement (CEE), you will lead and support diverse marketing and communications initiatives. This challenging yet rewarding position requires strategic thinking, creativity, and the ability to translate complex human rights issues into clear, accessible messages for a wide range of audiences.

As Communications Consultant, you will lead content creation, develop comprehensive communication plans, and support both internal and external communications initiatives. You'll collaborate closely with internal subject matter experts and CEE colleagues to ensure effective and timely delivery of key messages across various platforms.

Your responsibilities in this role will include but will not be limited to

• Developing and executing comprehensive marketing and communications strategies for internal and external audiences, including media relations, digital content, and brand management.
• Leading the development and planning for new communication vehicles like newsletters and other digital communication mediums.
• Creating and editing engaging, plain language content for diverse platforms like websites, social media, newsletters, reports, and speeches, ensuring accessibility and clarity.
• Leading public awareness campaigns and initiatives that increase awareness and understanding of human rights and the Commission.
• Conducting research and environmental scans to identify trends and inform strategic communication decisions.
• Providing expert communications advice and support, including issues management, strategic planning, and plain language audits and reviews.

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate:

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to craft clear, concise, and engaging plain language content.
• Strategic thinking for developing and implementing effective marketing and communication plans.
• Strong project management abilities to lead initiatives from concept to evaluation.
• Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills for engaging diverse internal and external stakeholders.
• Proficiency with digital communication tools (e.g., Adobe, Canva, email marketing platforms, social media management tools) and content management systems.
• Strong knowledge and understanding of social justice principles, such as equity, root causes, diversity, inclusion, racism, and discrimination.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard:

• University graduation (4 years) in a related field such as Social Sciences, Humanities, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or any other related degrees, plus 4 (four) years of progressively responsible related experience in areas like public information services, marketing, communications, or any other related areas; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
• Also, for this role, a directly related diploma is considered equivalent to university graduation.

Assets:

• Experience in developing and executing comprehensive strategic communications plans across a variety of traditional and digital communication vehicles.
• Experience in translating complex legislative, policy, or human rights information into clear, accessible, and engaging content tailored for diverse audiences.
• Experience developing content for a wide range of communication materials, including speaking notes, website articles, briefing notes, and annual reports.
• Experience with graphic design software and digital email marketing platforms (e.g., Canva, Campaigner) for creating impactful communication materials.
• Experience developing social media, website content, brand, and/or crisis communication strategies.

Hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15 am - 4:30 pm (36.25/week)

Positions Currently available: One (1) temporary position is available for 2 (two) years.

Location: This opportunity is located at 10405 Jasper Building, 10405 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton OR John J. Bowlen Building, 620 - 7 Avenue S. W., Calgary.
