Job summary

Mott MacDonald in Canada is seeking a Communication Systems Design Engineer to design and integrate communication systems for public infrastructure projects across North America. You will report to the Canada Communication Systems Lead and collaborate with rail, transit, airports, and ports teams.

The role requires a degree in engineering or science with 5+ years' experience and knowledge of interfaces between communications and facility infrastructure, including installation details and cable

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent in engineering or science (Electrical/Computer/Systems preferred).
• 5+ years of experience in design/specification of communication systems.
• Experience across telephony/intercom, fibre, networks, CCTV/security, radio/Wi‑Fi/SCADA/PLC.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop communication systems for transportation infrastructure (rail, transit, airports, ports).
• Prepare engineering designs, specs, drawings, and documentation.
• Support integration of fibre, telecom, security, radio, Wi‑Fi, SCADA solutions.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams on interfaces and requirements.
• Conduct site visits, assessments, and technical reviews for delivery.
• Assist with testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and standards adherence.

Mott MacDonald’s Toronto office is seeking a motivated Communication Systems Design Engineer. Reporting to the Canada Communication Systems Lead, the successful candidate will support the design of communication systems for public infrastructure projects including rail and transit, airports, and ports across North America.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop communication systems for transportation and infrastructure projects, including rail, transit, airports, and ports
• Prepare engineering designs, technical specifications, drawings, and supporting project documentation
• Support the design and integration of systems such as fibre‑optic networks, telecommunications, security systems, radio, Wi‑Fi, and SCADA solutions
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate communication system requirements and interfaces
• Conduct site visits, assessments, and technical reviews to support project delivery and system implementation
• Assist with system testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and ensuring designs meet project, client, and industry standards

Candidate Qualifications

• A degree or equivalent qualification in engineering or science, preferably in electrical, computer, or systems engineering
• At least 5 years of experience with the design and/or specification of communication systems
• Demonstrated design experience in at least two of the following areas:
  • Telephony and intercom systems
  • Fibre‑optic backbone infrastructure
  • Communication networks
  • Security Systems (CCTV, intrusion detection, and access control systems)
  • Radio, distributed antenna systems, and Wi‑Fi
  • SCADA, DCS, and PLC systems
• Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary project team
• Knowledge of systems integration principles and the interfaces between communication systems and facility infrastructure, including cable containment, equipment mounting, and installation details
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Benefits & Rewards

The expected salary range for this position is from $84,000 - $102,000.

Multiple factors such as qualifications, overall experience, and position responsibilities will be used to determine the successful candidate's actual salary within the expected range.
