Job summary

Mott MacDonald’s Toronto office is seeking a motivated Communication Systems Design Engineer to design and deliver advanced communication systems for public infrastructure across North America. You will support rail, transit, airports and ports while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

The role requires a degree in engineering or science, at least 7 years of experience, and Ontario P.Eng. licensure.

Qualifications

• Degree in engineering or science required.
• 7+ years designing and specifying communication systems for public infra projects.
• Design experience with SCADA, DCS and PLC systems.
• Experience in three or more areas: CCTV/video, access control, telephony/intercom, fibre/backbone, networks, radio/Wi‑Fi.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills.
• Working knowledge of systems integration and interfaces with facility infrastructure.
• P.Eng. licensure in Ontario required; INCOSE ASEP/CSEP desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, specification and delivery of communication systems for rail, transit, airport and port projects across North America.
• Advise project teams and clients on SCADA, DCS, PLC and integration solutions.
• Develop and review engineering designs, drawings, reports and contract documentation for control and comms systems.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces and ensure proper installation and integration with facility infrastructure.
• Manage design reviews, site assessments, contractor coordination, testing and commissioning.
• Support planning, budgeting, scheduling and quality management per client standards.

Mott MacDonald’s Toronto office is seeking a motivated Communication Systems Design Engineer. Reporting to the Canada Communication Systems Lead, the successful candidate will support the design of communication systems for public infrastructure projects including rail and transit, airports, and ports across North America.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, specification, and delivery of communication systems for rail, transit, airport, port, and other public infrastructure projects across North America
• Serve as a technical advisor to project teams and clients, providing expertise in communication systems, systems integration, and operational technology solutions
• Develop and review engineering designs, technical specifications, drawings, reports, and contract documentation for SCADA, DCS, PLC, and communication system projects
• Coordinate multidisciplinary project interfaces and ensure seamless integration of communication systems with facility infrastructure, including cable containment, equipment mounting, and installation requirements
• Manage technical project activities, including design reviews, site assessments, contractor coordination, system testing, commissioning, and issue resolution
• Support project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and quality management while ensuring compliance with client standards, applicable codes, and industry best practices

Candidate Qualifications

• A degree or equivalent qualification in engineering or science, preferably in electrical, computer, or systems engineering
• At least 7 years of progressive experience designing and specifying communication systems, preferably for public infrastructure projects
• Demonstrated design experience with SCADA, DCS, and PLC systems
• Demonstrated design experience in at least three of the following areas:
  • CCTV and video management systems
  • Intrusion detection and access control systems
  • Telephony and intercom systems
  • Fibre-optic backbone infrastructure
  • Communication networks
  • Radio, distributed antenna systems, and Wi‑Fi
• Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams
• Working knowledge of systems integration principles and the interfaces between communication systems and facility infrastructure, including cable containment, equipment mounting, and installation details
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure in Ontario is required
• INCOSE ASEP or CSEP certification is desirable
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• The expected salary range for this position is from $99000 - $122000.
• Multiple factors such as qualifications, overall experience, and position responsibilities will be used to determine the successful candidate's actual salary within the expected range.
