Job summary

Robins Appleby LLP in Toronto is seeking an experienced Litigation Law Clerk to support the Litigation Department from intake through trial preparation.

The ideal candidate has at least 5 years in commercial litigation, strong knowledge of Ontario court rules, and proficiency with Case Center, iManage, and MS Office. This role emphasizes accuracy, organization, and client communication in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Must have completed a Law Clerk program at a recognized community college.
  • Minimum of 5 years' law clerk experience in Commercial Litigation.
  • Solid understanding of commercial litigation procedures, court filings, and document management.
  • Extensive knowledge of Ontario court rules, legal procedures and filing requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of pleadings, motions, affidavits including affidavits of documents, and other legal documents.
  • Assist in the preparation of mortgage enforcement proceedings, including preparation of demand letters, notices of sale, notices under the Mortgages Act and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
  • Prepare and file documents with Ontario courts and tribunals in accordance with court rules and deadlines.
  • Manage and maintain case files, ensuring that all critical documents and records are organized and accessible.
  • Assist with the preparation for trial, including organizing exhibits, briefs, and witness lists.
  • Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, and court staff on case progress.
  • Draft correspondence and maintain detailed records of client communications.
  • Prepare and track litigation timelines, ensuring that all deadlines are met.
  • Prepare settlement documentation as directed; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Commercial Litigation Law Clerk

Our dynamic team is currently seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Litigation Law Clerk to support our Litigation Department. This is a pivotal role providing assistance to our lawyers with the management of commercial litigation matters, from initial case intake through to trial preparation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the preparation of pleadings, motions, affidavits including affidavits of documents, and other legal documents;

Qualifications Required:
  • Successful completion of a Law Clerk program at a recognized community college;
  • Minimum of 5 years' law clerk experience in Commercial Litigation with a solid understanding of commercial litigation procedures, court filings, and document management;
  • Substantial experience with the Estates List, Commercial List, secured debts, enforcements, powers of sale, and receiverships;
  • Extensive knowledge of Ontario court rules, legal procedures and filing requirements;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, and Outlook);
  • Working knowledge of Case Center;
  • Experience working with a document management system, e.g., iManage;
  • Well-developed organizational and time management skills in order to manage multiple files efficiently and be able to pivot with ease;
  • Strong communication skills to help build relationships and provide excellent client service;
  • Confident self-starter, able to work well both independently, and as part of a team;
  • Operate with a high degree of accuracy and strong attention to detail; and
  • Show good judgment and respond well to constructive feedback.
