Job description

The Phelps Group is proud to represent Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission on the search for their next Commercial Lead of Natural Gas.

About APMC

The Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission (APMC) is the commercial arm of the Government of Alberta, operating as an agent of the Crown under the Petroleum Marketing Act. Since 1974, APMC has played a critical role in maximizing the value of Alberta’s energy resources on behalf of Albertans.

APMC manages key commercial and strategic initiatives, including the marketing of Alberta’s royalty share of conventional crude oil, oversight of royalty reference pricing, participation in major energy infrastructure investments, and the pursuit of new business opportunities that support industry growth and market development.

Working at the intersection of government, industry, and global energy markets, APMC collaborates with stakeholders across the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors to identify opportunities that enhance Alberta’s competitiveness and long-term resource value. Guided by its vision to maximize the value of Alberta’s resources, APMC fosters a culture of innovation, accountability, and strategic thinking.

About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Advisor, Natural Gas, the Commercial Lead is responsible for leading the commercial strategy and performance of APMC’s natural gas marketing portfolio. This role plays a critical part in driving value creation across natural gas supply, transportation, storage, and sales activities while ensuring alignment with APMC’s broader strategic objectives.

Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the Commercial Lead serves as a key decision-maker and collaborates closely with origination, trading, risk management, and operations teams to capitalize on market opportunities, optimize portfolio performance, and support the growth of Alberta’s energy sector.

This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned commercial professional to influence market strategy, build industry relationships, negotiate complex agreements, and contribute to the long-term success of Alberta’s natural gas portfolio.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute the commercial strategy for APMC’s natural gas marketing activities.
  • Optimize portfolio value across supply, transportation, storage, and sales positions.
  • Establish commercial priorities based on market conditions, business objectives, and growth opportunities.
  • Contribute to long-term market positioning and strategic growth initiatives.
Origination & Business Development
  • Provide leadership and direction for origination activities, including engagement with producers, customers, and counterparties.
  • Identify and pursue new commercial opportunities that enhance portfolio performance and market access.
  • Support the structuring and negotiation of complex commercial agreements.
  • Maintain and strengthen senior-level relationships with key industry participants and stakeholders.
  • Partner closely with trading teams to align commercial strategies with market opportunities and risk parameters.
  • Ensure portfolio positions and transactions are aligned with established risk management frameworks and limits.
  • Contribute to pricing strategies and commercial decision-making processes.
  • Evaluate and approve commercial transactions within delegated authorities.
Operational Excellence & Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Serve as a key point of coordination across commercial, trading, risk, and operations functions.
  • Ensure compliance with internal governance, credit, and risk management requirements.
  • Balance commercial opportunities with operational realities and organizational risk tolerance.
  • Support a culture of collaboration, accountability, and commercial excellence across the organization.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in natural gas marketing, origination, commercial management, or related roles within Alberta’s energy industry.
  • Strong understanding of North American natural gas markets, including pricing hubs, transportation systems, market fundamentals, and export dynamics.
  • Demonstrated success managing, optimizing, or overseeing commercial portfolios.
  • Proven experience structuring, negotiating, and managing complex commercial agreements.
  • Strong understanding of commercial risk, valuation principles, and portfolio management strategies.
  • Strong commercial acumen and strategic decision-making capabilities.
  • Excellent relationship-building, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and competing deadlines.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and SharePoint.
