Job Description

The combination technician is responsible for installing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading customer telephony equipment in residential and business markets. This includes installing, interconnecting, and removing equipment related to data circuits, transmission networks, and other products like telephone systems and voicemail, with minimal supervision. The technician may also work on central office and mobility equipment as prioritized by the control center based on business needs. The technician must represent the company professionally, perform tasks safely and accurately, and demonstrate good planning, organization, teamwork, and multi-skilling.

Responsibilities
  • Install, move, remove, repair, replace, modify, and maintain data and voice transmission equipment following standards and procedures.
  • Organize daily workload, communicate with clients, and provide cost estimates when needed.
  • Troubleshoot copper or optical fiber issues using appropriate tools.
  • Perform splicing and cable relocation tasks.
  • Ensure network reliability, identify risky situations, and escalate when necessary.
  • Perform cable locates with suitable devices.
  • Follow heavy vehicle operation standards and safety checks.
  • Familiarize clients with their telephony equipment and promote products and services.
Additional Tasks
  • Test circuits and perform preventative maintenance.
  • Complete cabling, connections, and programming tasks.
  • Coordinate with specialized personnel for problem resolution.
  • Handle tools and equipment safely, maintain a safe work environment, and manage inventories.
  • Process data, service, and network orders.
  • Complete reports and forms related to work activities.
  • Respond to customer emergencies and urgent requests.
  • Be available for overtime and travel within the coverage area, including James Bay.
  • Possess a college diploma in electronics or telecommunications or equivalent experience; high school diploma required for non-Union candidates.
  • Have knowledge of residential and business products, basic programming skills, and a good understanding of outside plant and network infrastructure.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to undergo background checks.
  • Be physically capable of climbing poles, using ladders, and working in confined spaces, differentiating colors, and following safety rules, including those related to Hydro-Québec joint pole work and traffic control.
  • Possess knowledge of copper and fiber optic cables, test sets, and geographical information systems.
  • Proficiency in English and French is required, as interaction with bilingual stakeholders is necessary.
Work Conditions
  • Permanent position on a compressed schedule.
  • Work in the Northern Territories; residence outside is acceptable.
  • Must be able to travel, work in various weather conditions, and work overtime as needed.
  • Must have the physical capacity to perform tasks safely and use equipment properly.
