The Evidence in Allergy Group, led by Dr. Derek Chu, is a clinical and health research program based at McMaster University focused on improving the prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and implementation of care for allergic disease, with a major emphasis on food allergy and anaphylaxis. The program brings together clinical allergy and immunology, clinical epidemiology, health research methodology, evidence synthesis, and knowledge translation. Dr. Chu directs the allergy challenge clinic for diagnosis, research and treatment at McMaster University Medical Centre and is a CIHR Chair addressing allergy in human development, child and youth health. The program collaborates across McMaster University, Hamilton Health Sciences, The Research Institute of St. Joe's Hamilton, and national and international research partners.
The Group's research portfolio includes prospective observational studies and registries, investigator-initiated randomized clinical trials, and multicentre collaborative studies in food allergy, alongside systematic reviews, clinical practice guidelines, and knowledge-translation initiatives. Current research includes randomized trials of food-allergy treatment and prevention and observational studies addressing food-allergy diagnosis, prognosis, and reaction thresholds. Examples include the multicentre TITAN prospective registry, which examines food-allergy thresholds and clinical predictors using oral food challenges, and the TRADE randomized clinical trial evaluating approaches to tree-nut immunotherapy. The broader program also includes SHAPE, FACT and other initiatives spanning early-life allergy prevention, food-allergen thresholds, patient-important outcomes, evidence synthesis, and guideline development.
This work is conducted within a highly collaborative academic health sciences environment. McMaster University has been designated a World Allergy Organization Centre of Excellence, and the Evidence in Allergy program works closely with patients and caregivers, trainees, clinicians, research methodologists, scientists, and collaborators to generate evidence that can directly inform clinical care and health policy.
The Research Coordinator (II) will serve as a senior operational member of the research team and will take substantial ownership of the day-to-day implementation and coordination of multiple concurrent clinical research studies. A major focus of the position will be the successful start up-to-close out execution of prospective observational studies and randomized clinical trials in food allergy and anaphylaxis, including ethics/regulatory documentation, participant screening, recruitment and retention, informed consent/assent processes, coordination of study visits and longitudinal follow-up, implementation of study protocols, development and maintenance of study documentation and data-collection systems, data quality assurance, safety and adverse-event documentation, and coordination among investigators, clinical teams, research staff, participants and families, and collaborating sites.
The successful candidate will work in a participant-facing clinical research environment that may involve infants, children, adolescents, adults, parents and caregivers, depending on the study. Research activities may include coordination of studies involving oral food challenges, food-allergy treatment or prevention interventions, questionnaires and patient-reported outcomes, clinical and laboratory data, and longitudinal follow-up.
In addition to clinical study operations, the Research Coordinator (II) will contribute to the Group's broader scientific mission through data management and analysis, preparation of abstracts and manuscripts, literature review and evidence synthesis, development of grant and study materials, presentations and knowledge dissemination, and supervision and training of research staff and learners. The position is well suited to an individual who combines excellent clinical research operations skills and methodological rigour with teamwork, meticulous organization and communication, initiative, and the ability to independently move complex projects forward in a fast-paced academic environment.
Responsible for applying specialized knowledge to initiate, implement, manage, and coordinate moderate to large clinical research projects.
