Job description

Your Opportunity:

The CASES (Centre for the Advancement of Surgical Education and Simulation) Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a registered nurse who holds a master's or doctoral degree in nursing with experience in Adult Education and Perioperative Nursing. With in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgement and clinical experience, the CNS draws on diverse educational philosophies and pedagogical theories to explore curriculum issues relevant to learning and teaching in the perioperative area (pre-op, intra-op and post-op). The CNS provides expertise in competency-based assessment in health care in both the nursing context and provides support for interprofessional education in the operative services department which includes surgical residents, anesthesia assistants and other support staff. The CNS facilitates clinical educators and interprofessional clinical instructors to translate their perioperative subject matter expertise for front-line staff through co-design of education and simulation offerings. The CNS also recognizes and incorporates sensitivity to the needs of learners from diverse cultures and backgrounds. In addition to facilitating knowledge translation through education and simulation planning, the CASES CNS promotes quality patient care by:

  1. Mentoring and supporting Clinical Nurse Educators and Clinical Instructors in the provision of perioperative training in Edmonton Zone;
  2. Liaising with Edmonton Zone operating room managers to assist with education offerings and development of operative services - communities of practice;
  3. Participating in the implementation of quality and safety initiatives;
  4. Promoting harmonious and effective interdepartmental communication and relationships to ensure the provision of safe, quality patient care.
Description:

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), you will provide an advanced level of nursing practice that maximizes the application of in-depth nursing theory, knowledge and skills in meeting the complex health care needs of individuals, families and communities. You will function as a nursing practice leader, consultant, expert practitioner, educator and researcher within a clinical specialty area. You will balance various roles depending upon the needs of the patient population and the healthcare team, collaborating on the provision of holistic and comprehensive care. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Qualifications:
  • Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
  • Additional Required Qualifications:
  • As required.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Registered Nurse with master’s or doctoral degree in Nursing (education stream).
  • 3 years Perioperative Nursing Experience (operating room or surgical inpatient).
  • Additional certification in education/ and simulation learning National League of Nursing - Simulation Learning certification or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated competence in using Microsoft Suite of Tools.
