The CASES (Centre for the Advancement of Surgical Education and Simulation) Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a registered nurse who holds a master's or doctoral degree in nursing with experience in Adult Education and Perioperative Nursing. With in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgement and clinical experience, the CNS draws on diverse educational philosophies and pedagogical theories to explore curriculum issues relevant to learning and teaching in the perioperative area (pre-op, intra-op and post-op). The CNS provides expertise in competency-based assessment in health care in both the nursing context and provides support for interprofessional education in the operative services department which includes surgical residents, anesthesia assistants and other support staff. The CNS facilitates clinical educators and interprofessional clinical instructors to translate their perioperative subject matter expertise for front-line staff through co-design of education and simulation offerings. The CNS also recognizes and incorporates sensitivity to the needs of learners from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
