Job summary

William Osler Health System in Brampton is hiring Temporary Part‑Time Clinical Externs across Medicine, Surgery and Stroke. Externs work as unregulated health care providers under nursing supervision, performing delegated acts within RHPA guidelines.

Responsibilities include assisting with patient care, safety, and comfort, under supervision; candidates should be nursing students in advanced years with strong academics and BCLS certification. Flexible day/evening/night shifts offered.

Qualifications

• Nursing students in 3rd year or final year RN/RPN studies.
• Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing.
• Current BCLS certification required.
• Certifications provided via orientation (Mask Fit Test, WHMIS, AODA, IPAC).
• Infection prevention and control practices demonstrated.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Recent clinical placement in an acute care area preferred.

Responsibilities

• Works under supervision of nursing professionals on the unit.
• Supports nurses to ensure knowledge and judgment required for actions.
• Assists with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating as per policy.
• Provides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries.
• Maintains a clean, safe environment and reports hazards.
• Requests assistance with duties when needed.
• Demonstrates problem‑solving, decision making and critical thinking skills.
• Shows organizational and time‑management abilities.
• Participates as a team member.

Education

CNO approved baccalaureate-nursing program (3rd year or final RN/RPN)

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification

Mandatory certifications per orientation (Mask Fit Test, WHMIS, AODA, IPAC)

Job Description

We have Temporary Part‑Time Clinical Extern positions across multiple departments, including Medicine, Surgery and Stroke departments at Brampton Civic Hospital and Etobicoke General Hospital.

The Clinical Extern will be working in the capacity as unregulated health care provider. They may perform pre‑identified controlled acts authorized to nursing within the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario delegated to them under the supervision of a nursing professional who is authorized to perform them.

Qualifications

• Nursing Students enrolled in a CNO approved baccalaureate‑nursing program who have completed their 3rd year or are in their final year of RN study or final year of RPN studies
• Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
• Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required
• Completion of mandatory/required certifications provided via corporate orientation, including extern orientation, and as defined by unit (e.g., Mask Fit Test, WHIMS, AODA, IPAC)
• Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills
• Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute care area preferred

• Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of managers and nursing professionals on the unit and in a manner consistent with organizational policies and professional standards, while taking into account CNO’s guidance for working with unregulated care providers
• Works with nurses to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions
• Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating as per the hospital policy
• Provides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries
• Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards
• Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever needed
• Demonstrates excellent problem‑solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
• Demonstrates excellent organizational and time‑management skills
• Participates as a team member

Additional Information

Hours: Currently, Days/Evenings/Nights, 8‑ and 12‑hour shifts, including weekends and statutory holidays (Subject to change in accordance with operational requirements). Minimum 15 to 24 hours per pay period (0.15 to 0.3 FT) to a maximum of full‑time hours (75 hours per pay period).
