Job Summary & Requirements

RVH is seeking interested nursing, paramedic, undergraduate medical, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy students to join our Enhanced Extern Program. This employment opportunity allows students to work in a clinical environment, develop competencies, and prepare for future registered roles after completing their studies. Successful candidates will gain patient care experience and build connections within an interprofessional hospital environment. The Clinical Extern may be considered for career opportunities upon graduation and licensure.

Job Summary:

The Clinical Externs are unregulated healthcare providers working as part of an interprofessional team to provide patient-centred care under the supervision of a designated Health Professional, reporting to professional practice leadership. They will practice in alignment with the organization's Mission, Vision, and Values, within the limits of their professional scope.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • Must be enrolled in one of the following programs:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) students in an accredited baccalaureate program
  • Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) students in an accredited nursing program
  • Undergraduate Medical students in their final year or recent Canadian medical graduates awaiting residency
  • Respiratory Therapy students in their 2nd or 3rd year of a diploma program
  • Paramedic students in their 2nd year of an approved program
  • Occupational Therapy students
  • Physiotherapy students

An official school transcript will be required if invited for an interview.

  • Current BLS certification
  • Completion of onboarding orientation and mandatory training
  • Maintained good academic standing
  • Successful clinical placement experiences

Responsibilities:

  • Work under supervision of healthcare professionals, following organizational policies and practice guidelines
  • Assist with activities of daily living and other patient care activities, including:

Patient Care Activities:

  • Assistance with feeding, toileting, bathing, dressing
  • Mobility assistance and transfers
  • Skin integrity measures
  • Responding to call bells
  • Measuring vital signs, height, and weight
  • Comfort measures and participation in comfort rounds
  • Contributing to care planning and implementation
  • Providing companionship and social engagement
  • Reporting patient status changes or safety concerns
  • Performing assessments such as Falls Risk, Pain, Braden Scale, CAM
  • Other relevant care activities as appropriate

Clinical Rotation Areas include: Cardiac Renal, Cancer Palliative, Emergency, Inpatient Medicine, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Surgical Units, Surgery Prep/PACU, ICU.

Hours of Work: Rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
