Position Summary
As an integral member of the Laboratory Medicine Program's Division of Clinical Biochemistry, the responsibilities of the Clinical Biochemist are as following:

Duties

  • Provide oversight and support for clinical biochemistry as it related to: analytical and quality aspects of laboratory analysis, method development and implementation, interpretation of results, consultation with physicians, participation in on-call coverage and support partner client hospital laboratories.
  • Expected to develop an independent or collaborative research program and to qualify for an appointment at one of the UHN's Research Institutes as an Associate Scientist.
  • Expected to participate in postgraduate teaching in the Postdoctoral Training Program in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Toronto, teaching within the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology and at the University Health Network, and in various continuing medical education activities.
Qualifications

Education

  • Must hold a PhD degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related disciplines and be certified (or eligible for certification) in clinical chemistry by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (CACB) and/or the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC).

Experience

  • A strong record of scholarship, experience or special training in clinical biochemistry, toxicology, routine and STAT chemistry, special chemistry, endocrinology, mass spectrometry, point of care testing and other state-of-the-art methodologies in biochemical diagnostics.

Professional Affiliations/Memberships

  • Fellowship with Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (CACB) and/or the America Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC).

Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent problem recognition and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.
  • Highly motivated individual with demonstrated professional skills, able to work in team settings, and have excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and team leader.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Continuing Education.

The successful candidate should be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
