Job summary

The City of Edmonton seeks a Climate Resilience Planner to advance citywide environmental strategies. You will lead complex planning projects, develop strategic policies, and integrate climate actions into urban development, reporting to the Senior Environmental Engineer.

You will coordinate multi-disciplinary teams, conduct policy research, and prepare briefing memos for City Council. Hybrid work may be available; hours are ~33.75 per week with a focus on advancing climate targets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Climate Science, or a related field.
• Minimum 4 years of policy planning or strategy development experience in climate change planning, project delivery, and partner engagement.

Join us in shaping a sustainable, climate-resilient future for Edmonton! As a Climate Resilience Planner, you will play a vital role in advancing key environmental strategies and policies across our city.

In this role, you will lead complex planning projects, develop strategic policies, and integrate climate mitigation and adaptation actions into urban development. Working under the guidance of the Senior Environmental Engineer, you will help implement foundational strategies like the Energy Transition Strategy, execute key initiatives, and collaborate closely with diverse teams and community partners.

What will you do?

• Support integration of climate resilience actions into the planning and development continuum, including the zoning bylaw, statutory plans, and public realm strategies
• Lead end-to-end project management for strategic climate initiatives, from scoping and procurement to contract execution and deliverable review
• Support implementation of key municipal strategies, including Edmonton's Climate Resilience Planning and Development Action Plan, Community Energy Transition Strategy and Climate Adaptation Strategy
• Conduct policy research, analyze data, and prepare clear recommendations, briefing memos, and reports for City Council and senior leadership
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, external consultants, industry groups, and engagement participants to build consensus and advance environmental priorities
• Coordinate detailed technical studies to inform evidence-based policy choices
• Develop evaluation and monitoring frameworks to track progress on corporate climate targets

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Climate Science, or a related field
• Minimum 4 years of policy planning or strategy development experience in climate change planning, project delivery, and partner engagement

Assets:

• Master's degree in Urban Planning, Climate Science, or a related discipline
• Membership or eligibility for membership in the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI)
• Formal project management training

Skills required for success:

• Expertise in climate change mitigation, adaptation practices, and municipal land-use planning
• Strong project management capabilities to lead multi-disciplinary teams and manage external consultants, budgets, and timelines
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for preparing executive reports and presenting to decision-makers
• Skilled in establishing working relationships with internal departments, community partners, and key collaborators
• Critical thinking and research skills to translate complex climate science into practical policy recommendations
• Adaptability to manage shifting priorities, dynamic environments, and complex projects in a public-sector setting
• Conflict resolution and negotiation skills to address sensitive topics with engagement participants

• Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
• The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
• This role works primarily in an indoor setting. Availability to attend events during the evenings and weekends may be required from time to time. This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states

Salary Range: $54.155 - $69.110 (Hourly)
