Job summary

Sheguiandah First Nation is seeking a Climate & Food Systems Coordinator to lead integrated climate-health and Indigenous food systems initiatives. The role supports community resilience, food sovereignty, and environmental stewardship through land-based learning and knowledge integration.

The Coordinator will design programs, engage Elders and youth, manage budgets, and liaise with partners while ensuring culturally appropriate, evidence-based approaches aligned with local strategies.

Qualifications

• Degree or certificate in Public Health, Environmental Health, Climate Science, Environmental Studies, Indigenous Studies, or related field (or equivalent).
• Experience in program coordination, environmental health, climate initiatives, or community development.
• Strong knowledge of climate-health impacts and/or Indigenous food systems.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities and cultural knowledge systems.
• Strong research, analytical, and project management skills.
• Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence.
• First Aid & CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Ability to travel.
• Knowledge of Sheguiandah First Nation programs is an asset.
• Must provide a current Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).

Responsibilities

• Plan and oversee the Indigenous Food Forest, including plant selection and site management.
• Integrate traditional ecological knowledge, cultural practices, and public health principles into all programming.
• Engage Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and community members through program development, workshops, and land-based learning.
• Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, health agencies, and government partners.
• Provide information, coordinate outsourced assessments, collect relevant data, and monitor program outcomes.
• Support development of policies and ensure alignment with local, provincial, and national strategies.
• Develop and manage work plans, timelines, budgets, and reporting requirements.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and organizational standards, including food handling and outdoor safety practices.
• Represent the organization on committees and working groups.
• Other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Term Contract (15 Weeks)

HOURS OF WORK: Administration Hours (8:30am-4:30pm)

PREFERENCE: Person of Indigenous decedent/Sheguiandah First Nation Band Member

Position Summary

The Climate & Food Systems Coordinator is responsible for leading the planning, coordination, and implementation of integrated climate health adaptation and Indigenous food system initiatives. This position supports community resilience, food sovereignty, and environmental stewardship by combining climate-health programming with land-based food forest development rooted in Indigenous knowledge.

The coordinator provides leadership in program design, stakeholder engagement, policy alignment, and community programming while ensuring culturally appropriate, sustainable, and evidence-based approaches.

Essential Functions

• Design, implement, and evaluate integrated climate-health and food systems programs.
• Develop and apply evidence-based strategies to address climate-related health risks (e.g., heat, air quality, water, food security, vector-borne diseases).
• Plan and oversee the Indigenous Food Forest, including plant selection, site management, and long-term sustainability.
• Integrate traditional ecological knowledge, cultural practices, and public health principles into all programming.
• Engage Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and community members through program development, workshops, and land-based learning.
• Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, health agencies, and government partners.
• Provide information, coordinate outsourced assessments, collect relevant data, and monitor program outcomes to support continuous improvement.
• Support development of policies and ensure alignment with local, provincial, and national strategies, including emergency preparedness.
• Develop and manage work plans, timelines, budgets, and reporting requirements.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and organizational standards, including food handling and outdoor safety practices.
• Represent the organization on committees and working groups.
• Other duties as assigned.
