Duties and Responsibilities

The Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) is seeking a qualified Client Service Technician to provide excellent support to clients by facilitating submission of quality diagnostic samples and timely reception of laboratory reports. This involves discussing laboratory testing and procedures including sample selection, handling and shipping with clients and requires a thorough knowledge of internal laboratory protocols and procedures including those in specimen reception so that these can be conveyed to veterinary clients. The incumbent will provide independent technical support to veterinarians and other clients who use the AHL, including case follow up. Duties include: advising clients on proper sample selection and the use of supplies for optimal laboratory results; submission form maintenance including customized submission forms; client account organization and updating; technical aspects of maintaining client accounts; supply procurement, receiving and distribution to clients; and providing support in specimen reception with data entry and send outs.

Requirements

  • Two year community college program for Veterinary Technician, Laboratory Technican, or Animal Health Technician (AHT) preferred, and one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of veterinary medical terminology.
  • Excellent computer, data-entry and keyboarding skills.
  • Working experience in an organization with quality accreditation and a thorough. understanding of quality protocols.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory information management systems.
  • Knowledge of biosafety and safe sample handling and distribution.
  • Experience with specimen accessioning with a diversity of samples.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external clients and to be able to relay critical information to others.
  • Some experience with billing/invoicing and accepting payments from clients.
  • Proven ability to be an effective team player in a high-volume, time-sensitive setting.
  • Proven experience with telephone/frontline client relations.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety in a laboratory environment.

Must be, or willing to be, rabies vaccinated.

Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week with scheduled start times between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
