As a Civil Technologist, you will join our Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta office as part of our Western Surface Water Engineering team. The successful applicant will be involved in all stages of design and construction, from field data collection, concept development to detailed design, and construction. You will produce 3D drawings using LiDAR and surveyed point files to create surfaces, alignments, profiles, and corridors. As a team member, you will ensure quality control by adhering to company CAD and engineering standards and project-specific constraints. Responsibilities include:

  1. Actively contribute to maintaining Matrix’s strong safety culture
  2. Collaborate with engineers, technologists, and environmental scientists to create drawing packages using AutoDesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD, including: conceptual, preliminary, and detailed designs for water management plans, municipal infrastructure (e.g., storm sewer and stormwater management facilities), riverbank improvements, bridges and culverts, pipeline watercourse crossings, and natural channel designs
  3. Conduct topographic surveys, construction supervision, field engineering, and other data collection activities
  4. Interpret field notes and use digital field returns such as site photography, UAV imagery, and survey data, to prepare deliverables
  5. Produce 2D drawings and figures such as site plans, profiles, and cross-sections
  6. Build surfaces, alignments, profiles, and corridors
  7. Interpret survey data for final technical reports or drawing packages

What We Are Looking For

  1. Experience in a fast-paced, client and team-focused environment is preferred.
  2. College diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent
  3. Minimum 2 years of experience in the water resource sector, preferably in consulting
  4. Professional Designation of C.Tech, CET, P.Tech or ability to obtain within 2 years. Working towards a P.Eng would also be considered an asset
  5. Proficient in AutoDesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD
  6. Knowledge of Globalmapper, Autodesk Recap, or GIS related programs an asset.
  7. Willing to travel and work in urban and remote locations across Alberta
  8. Experience using survey equipment, including high precision GPS units, Total Stations, and UAVs
  9. Experience working on construction sites around heavy equipment
  10. Comfortable working in and around watercourses, including swift water and ice conditions
  11. Self-motivated with strong communication skills (oral and written)
  12. Able to prioritize deadlines, track project status, and facilitate progress on multiple projects
  13. Flexible to meet client-driven deliverables
  14. Valid class 5 driver’s license

This is a permanent position with an hourly rate range of $21.15-$36.06, starting pay is dependent on multiple factors, such as skills, experience, and work location.
