Job summary

The Technologist - Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo will support teaching and research in Architectural Engineering and Civil Engineering programs. The role involves managing the Architectural Engineering Maker Space, Advanced Wood Research Lab, and related labs to enable undergraduate and graduate work.

Responsibilities include setting up equipment, preparing materials, instructing students in lab practices, and ensuring safety standards are met.

Qualifications

• 3 year Diploma in related field (Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology), or B.Sc. in Building Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Several years’ work experience in a related industrial or academic setting
• Thorough understanding of BIM software and lab equipment

Responsibilities

• Set up, maintain, and operate Architectural Engineering Maker Space (AEMS), Advanced Wood Research Lab (AWRL) and SMFC labs for undergrad/grad use
• Provide lab instruction to architectural and civil engineering students and researchers
• Prepare lab materials, procedures, equipment, and order supplies for teaching labs
• Instruct and guide students on use of 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers and workshop tools
• Maintain and calibrate lab equipment; fabricate models and test apparatus as needed
• Manage lab space calendars and coordinate equipment scheduling
• Ensure safety procedures and PPE usage; support health, safety, and environmental guidelines
