Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Civil Engineer at our Yellowknife/Whitehorse area to contribute to Northern Canada transportation and municipal infrastructure projects.

You will perform civil design using AutoCAD Civil3D, participate in field reviews, and support project teams from planning through delivery. A bachelor’s degree and EIT eligibility are required, with 1–2 years of experience preferred, and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
• 1–2 years Civil engineering experience preferred.
• Registered as an EIT or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil3D.
• Valid driver's license.
• Basic MS Office skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist with civil design using AutoCAD Civil3D for water/sewer, roads, and site development.
• Conduct field reviews and supervision of junior staff during peak seasons.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams under a project manager.
• Perform calculations to analyze and design civil components.
• Support data collection and design decisions.
• Ensure compliance with codes and standards.

Your Opportunity

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to some of the most significant transportation and economic infrastructure initiatives in Northern Canada, including current and future work associated with the Mackenzie Valley Highway, Grays Bay Road and Port, and the broader Arctic Economic Security Corridor. Alongside these major corridor projects, this role is also deeply connected to the municipal engineering needs of small and growing northern communities—where reliable roads, drainage, water and sewer systems, site servicing, and resilient community infrastructure directly support daily life, access to essential services, housing growth, emergency response, and long-term economic sustainability.

Your Key Responsibilities

• With guidance, perform civil engineering design using knowledge of relevant software programs primarily AutoCAD Civil3D including underground utilities (water/sewer conveyance using pipe networks), roadways (alignments using corridors), and site developments (using surface and grading commands).
• Perform significant field work/review services related to construction administration and surveying related activities (up to 90% field work during peak seasons), including the supervision of junior field staff when required.
• Works with other engineering disciplines and professionals in the completion of the project under the direction of a project coordinator or project manager.
• Performs calculations to analyze and design civil system components using company standard software.
• Assists with engineering duties on projects of various complexity and size
• Assists with collecting data and gathering information to support design decisions.
• Assists in basic interpretation and verifying compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards and practices.
• Performs a variety of tasks which may include analyzing proposed project solutions to ensure design integrity, reliability, resource efficiently and cost effectiveness.
• Performs other duties as assigned by project managers or supervisor.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Understanding of concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design.
• Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, and other similar material.
• Strong organizational skills, along with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and demonstrate a flexible approach to work assignments.
• Experience and a willingness to undertake construction reviews is also required.
• Requires understanding and proficiency of AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Basic understanding of topographic or construction layout surveying.
• Basic understanding of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Possession of a valid driver license.
• Physical ability to work in various environmental conditions with varied terrain with the ability to lift/carry heavy equipment weighing up to 50lbs.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
• Minimum of 1-2 years of Civil engineering experience preferred
• Registered as an EIT or ability to obtain within the next 6 months
