Qualifications

  • Previous work experience in community social services/youth services/health care field.
  • Current first-aid and CPR certification.
  • Ability to work shift work and effectively within a team.

Job description

CHILDYOUTH WORKER

About the Role

Child Youth Workers (CYW) shall have the personality, ability, and temperament necessary to interact with supported children and youth with behavioural problems and compulsive behaviours, in a manner that will respect and maintain the persons’ spirit, dignity and individuality.

It is the responsibility of the CYW to encourage and empower the youth they support to be as independent as possible and to reach their fullest potential while maintaining community standards of care, health and safety.

Core Responsibilities

  • To assist persons with intellectual impairment and learning disabilities, behavioural problems, and compulsive behaviours
  • To implement behavioural interventionalist strategies
  • Seeking candidates with a Trauma Informed approach, demonstrating sensitivity to trauma's impact, utilizing stress-regulation tools, and supporting system change to reduce re-traumatization.
  • To assist persons with intellectual impairment and learning disabilities, behavioural problems, and compulsive behaviours
  • Familiarity with mental health and wellness topics, including eating disaorders
  • Experience in a supportive role that involves promoting holistic well-being
  • Knowledge of resources and strategies for creating an inclusive and supportive environment
  • To relate to every supported child/youth in a caring positive manner; which promotes feelings of personal worth and dignity
  • To focus on the developmental potential which acknowledges the child/youth’s rights to self-determination and privacy
  • To ensure the individuals meet their dietary needs according to the strict dietary plans
  • To ensure each child/youth’s basic needs are met i.e., food, clothing, health care and emotional well being
  • To ensure each child/youth is involved in the numerous decision-making situations in the home and community
  • To support the child/youth in all areas of personal growth directed towards their becoming as self-sufficient as possible
  • To monitor child/youth’s health needs
  • To assist the child/youth with self-care, safety, banking, budgeting and household management
  • To provide role models for the child/youth and be aware of staff’s role in public education, relations and information with due regard for confidentiality
  • To ensure the child/youth is fully involved in their community and to foster and promote personal relationships and involvement in community groups
  • To offer suggestions and give input regularly regarding child/youth’s outings, activities, and social events
  • To accompany the child/youth as required to and from various professional appointments
  • To assist the child/youth with planning for and purchasing their clothing and other personal needs
  • To teach the use of public transportation
  • and develop healthy leisure time outlets of cultural, social and recreational nature wherever possible
  • To maintain liaison between families, friends, community agencies and other staff
  • To assist and support the child/youth to maintain contact with family and friends
  • To work in conjunction with the child/youth to assure that their home is well maintained and tidy at all times, including daily food preparation and light housekeeping duties
  • To attend any in-service as required
  • To perform other tasks as assigned by the managers as required

You will have

  • Grade 12 education
  • Post-secondary Certificate/Diploma in the community social services/youth services/health care field
  • Previous work experience in the community social services/youth services/health care field
  • Experience working with challenging individuals or,
  • Willing to learn/ trained to work with persons with high behaviours
  • Strict Dietary Management Skills
  • Must be willing to get a Criminal Records Search
  • Current first-aid and CPR certification
  • Unrestricted Class 4 driving license
  • Any qualifications or skills required of the Licensing Officer or the funding body
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to work shift work
  • Experience in professional planning and implementation
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other staff, professionals and families
  • Previous behaviour management course/training
