This posting will be used to fill 1 term full-time position working 75 hours bi-weekly until March 31, 2027. It will establish a 12-month eligibility list which may be used to fill similar positions.

This job is based in the thriving and diverse city of Whitehorse in the beautiful Yukon .

Who We Are

The Government of Yukon's Mental Wellness and Substance Use Services division is known for its innovative, holistic, trauma informed and culturally accessible approach to providing mental health and substance use supports to all Yukoners. The Child, Youth and Family Treatment Team is a team that operates within Mental Wellness and Substance Use Services. We aim to provide a range of individual, group and family counselling and support services to school-aged children, youth and families in the Yukon.

Your role

Working as a member of the Mental Wellness and Substance Use team, the Child, Youth & Family Clinical Counsellor provides comprehensive assessment, treatment services and case management to children and youth ages 5 to 19, and their families, who may be affected by any combination of mental health problems, diagnosed mental illness, and/or problematic substance use and addiction. Within the context of a client-centered care model, the Child, Youth & Family Clinical Counsellor will perform duties that support assessment, treatment planning, crisis intervention, aftercare services, consultation, and individual counselling and group programming to facilitate and coordinate client access to services.

The Child, Youth & Family Clinical Counsellors will work as part of a team of mental wellness professionals in Whitehorse and will have the responsibility to provide appropriate and specialized assessment and evidence based treatment services for a full range of presenting issues, including concurrent disorders.

This role will work closely with an integrated care team of counsellors, a registered nurse and child and youth engagement support workers. Care planning often includes providers from other programs/organization areas, and case conferences and consultations with clients, family, service providers and members of the interdisciplinary team are common. The position provides collaboration and clinical support to their colleagues in order to meet the holistic needs of the child and youth population and to provide integration and continuity across the care continuum.

Essential qualifications

  • Masters degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Counselling, or other related disciplines; a PHD with an equivalent clinical masters or doctorate's degree may also be considered
  • Recent experience providing assessment and treatment planning for children, youth, and families;
  • Experience delivering individual counselling to children and youth;
  • Experience with group programming with children or youth;
  • Experience delivering psycho-educational programs;
  • Experience providing case management services.

  • Ability to employ evidence based strategies for different mental health presentations in children and youth

Conditions of employment

You must meet the following conditions before being hired, or within the time frame noted.

  • Verification of post-secondary degree(s)
  • Vulnerable Sector RCMP Security clearance
  • TB screening
  • Valid class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent
  • WHMIS 2015 (within one month of hire)

Job Requirements

This job requires you to perform, and/or be exposed to, the following:

  • Regularly exposed to depressed, anxious, suicidal, emotional, angry and potentially aggressive clients and/or caregivers.
  • Workplace stresses arise from counseling clients with addictions and mental health who are experiencing issues of a life crisis (serious illness, suicide, death, violence, relationship breakdowns, etc.)
  • May be exposed to wilderness and/or remote locations and environments; the incumbent may be required to travel within the Yukon on a regular basis during all weather conditions.
  • May be required to drive to work in alternate locations such as school, physician office.
