Position Overview

Reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the Childminding Caregiver/Youth Leader is part of the Y’s Health, Membership, and Recreation team. The role involves developing and delivering programs that promote the physical, mental, and social health of children and youth. As a child-minding caregiver, your primary focus will be engaging with children aged 3 months to 5 years and forming relationships with their families to create a safe, welcoming environment. As a Youth Leader, you will supervise youth in YMCA programs, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for participants of various skills and abilities.

Core Responsibilities

Youth Leader:

  • Act as a positive role model and guide youth behavior effectively.
  • Plan, organize, and lead scheduled sports and youth programs.
  • Use inclusive and adaptive programming principles and resource additional support as needed.
  • Set up and supervise drop-in and scheduled sports programs.
  • Handle scheduling and administrative duties, including sign-in/sign-out procedures.
  • Maintain safety and organization during and outside program hours.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  • Enforce facility guidelines to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
  • Understand and adhere to Child Protection Policies.
  • Act as a coach, mentor, and team player for youth and families.
  • Participate in workshops, training, conferences, and staff meetings.
  • Encourage youth participation in discussions, planning, and volunteer development.

Childminding Caregiver:

  • Show commitment to children’s learning and respond to research-based best practices.
  • Understand each child's and family’s specific needs and develop plans for successful outcomes.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures outlined in employee and childcare manuals.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise daily childminding activities.
  • Apply inclusive and adaptive programming principles and seek additional support when necessary.
  • Greet children and families, engaging them to provide excellent YMCA experiences.
  • Track participant participation daily.
  • Be knowledgeable about all YMCA programs and services.
Expected Responsibilities
  • Model behavior aligned with YMCA’s mission, vision, and values; foster positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and members.
  • Represent YMCA professionally in relationships and documentation.
  • Value philanthropy and volunteerism.
  • Manage personal professional development and responsibilities effectively.
Skills and Qualifications
  • High School or Post-Secondary Education.
  • Experience working with children; sports and youth programs are assets.
  • Strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills.
  • Team player with cooperative leadership abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Must pass a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and obtain clearance from the Department of Social Development.

Working Conditions
  • This is a casual position with hours and locations subject to change based on programming needs.
  • Work includes rotating shifts, including openings, closings, and weekends.
  • Travel to and from work is the employee’s responsibility.
  • Work environment may be busy with high noise levels, requiring supervision of multiple activities and direct interaction with children, including those with communicable diseases.
  • Responsibilities include ensuring children’s safety, performing first aid and CPR as needed, and planning activities collaboratively.
  • Position requires standing, sitting, and crouching to engage with children at their level, following YMCA Canada National Experience Program standards.
