Position Overview

Reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the Childminding Caregiver/Youth Leader is part of the Y’s Health, Membership, and Recreation team. The role involves working collaboratively with staff and volunteers to develop and deliver programs that support the physical, mental, and social health of children and youth. As a child-minding caregiver, the primary focus is engaging with children aged 3 months to 5 years and forming relationships with their families to create a safe, welcoming environment. As a Youth Leader, the successful applicant will supervise youth participating in YMCA Youth and Sports programs, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for youth and families of various skills and abilities.

Core Responsibilities
Youth Leader
  1. Act as a positive role model, guiding youth behavior effectively.
  2. Plan, organize, and lead scheduled sports and youth programs and activities.
  3. Use inclusive and adaptive programming principles to serve all participants, resource additional support as needed.
  4. Set up and supervise drop-in and scheduled sports programs.
  5. Handle scheduling and administrative duties, including sign-in/sign-out procedures.
  6. Maintain a safe and organized environment during and outside of program hours.
  7. Ensure program and facility equipment are well-maintained and orderly.
  8. Communicate and enforce facility guidelines to promote safety and prevent accidents.
  9. Understand and adhere to Child Protection Policies and Practices.
  10. Act as a coach, teammate, and mentor to youth and families.
  11. Participate in workshops, training, conferences, and staff meetings as required.
  12. Encourage youth participation in discussions, planning, and volunteer opportunities within programs and the community.
Childminding Caregiver
  1. Demonstrate commitment to children’s learning, responding to research and individual needs.
  2. Understand each child's and family’s specific needs and plans for success.
  3. Follow YMCA policies and procedures outlined in employee and child care manuals.
  4. Plan, organize, and supervise daily childminding activities.
  5. Apply inclusive and adaptive programming principles, resource additional support as necessary.
  6. Greet children and families, engaging in conversations to provide positive experiences.
  7. Accurately track participant attendance daily.
  8. Maintain knowledge of all YMCA programs and services offered.
Expected Responsibilities
  1. Model appropriate behavior aligned with YMCA mission, vision, and values; build effective relationships with staff, volunteers, and members.
  2. Represent the YMCA professionally in relationships and documentation.
  3. Value philanthropy and volunteerism.
  4. Manage personal professional development and necessary work tasks.
Skills and Qualifications
  • High School diploma or Post-Secondary education.
  • Experience working with children; experience in sports and youth programs is an asset.
  • Strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills.
  • Team player with cooperative leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must pass a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and obtain clearance from the Department of Social Development.

Working Conditions
  • This is a casual position with variable hours based on program needs, including evenings and weekends.
  • Coverage at all times the Centre is open, requiring a rotating schedule.
  • Staff are responsible for their own travel to work.
  • Work environment may be busy with high noise levels and multiple activities.
  • Supervision of children, including those with communicable diseases, with responsibilities including First Aid and CPR.
  • Planning and structuring activities collaboratively with team members.
  • This role requires standing, sitting, and crouching to engage with children at their level.
  • Adherence to YMCA Canada National Experience Program is mandatory.
