Position Summary

This is a high-impact executive role designed for a strategic operator who thrives in fast-paced, evolving environments and isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves. As Chief Operating Officer (COO), you will report directly to the CEO and take ownership of all internal operations, ensuring excellence in client delivery, managing performance and resources, and building the infrastructure needed to support scalable, sustainable growth.

We’ve built a strong foundation with fractional support across finance, marketing, and HR. Now, we’re entering our next phase of operational maturity - and we’re seeking a COO who can lead from the front, balancing strategic oversight with hands-on execution. This is a role for someone who enjoys getting into the details, implementing systems, managing teams, and solving operational challenges as they arise.

It’s ideally suited to an entrepreneurial, action-oriented leader who is equally comfortable setting direction and doing the work. You’ll need to be adaptable, pragmatic, and skilled at managing up, across, and down within a dynamic consulting business.

Responsibilities

As Chief Operating Officer, you will:

  • Collaborate Closely with the CEO: Act as a trusted partner to the CEO. Provide clear operational reporting, anticipate challenges, and ensure executive-level alignment on goals and priorities.
  • Drive Strategic Planning & Execution: Implement and operationalize long-term strategies that align with company goals. Translate vision into processes, metrics, and execution plans.
  • Oversee Day-to-Day Operations: Lead and continuously improve our consulting delivery model, contractor performance, and internal operational systems.
  • Optimize Financial & Operational Performance: Work with the fractional CFO to manage budgets, monitor financial KPIs, and ensure efficient cost structures.
  • Lead Cross-Functional Team Management: Manage a remote team that includes consultants, support staff, and fractional leaders. Promote accountability, efficiency, and a collaborative work culture.
  • Implement Workforce Planning & Talent Strategy: Identify current and future skill requirements. Coordinate recruitment, onboarding, and workforce scaling strategies.
  • Enhance Customer Satisfaction & Service Delivery: Ensure high-quality, consistent client delivery through proactive workflow and resource management.
  • Lead Risk Management & Contingency Planning: Assess operational risks, develop mitigation plans, and maintain continuity in service delivery.

Essential Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 10+ years of experience in small business or startup operations, ideally within a consulting or services environment.
  • Strong background in Lean Six Sigma, process improvement, or performance management (preferred).
  • Demonstrated success managing remote, cross-functional teams.
  • Proven ability to lead strategic planning, execution, and change management efforts.
  • Strong financial literacy and experience managing budgets and KPIs.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage up and collaborate with C-level leadership.
