Job description

Position Summary

POWERGROUP Resources, on behalf of our client Wessuc Inc is seeking a strategic, hands-on Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead and evolve our operations across Ontario. As a key member of the executive team, the COO will be responsible for optimizing day-to-day operations, ensuring organizational compliance, and driving long-term growth in a field-based, service-driven business.

This role is ideal for an experienced COO or CEO with a background in asset-intensive industries—such as construction, logistics, agriculture, utilities, or industrial services—who is ready to bring their leadership, operational insight, and business acumen into a critical and growing environmental sector.

The successful candidate will oversee cross-functional teams, guide risk and compliance strategies, and foster a high-performance culture rooted in safety, accountability, and sustainable service delivery. A strong understanding of HR, legal, and regulatory frameworks is key, along with the ability to lead complex field operations and adapt quickly to a highly regulated environment.

While prior experience in biosolids or waste management is not required, a willingness to learn, build technical fluency, and engage meaningfully with environmental regulations will be essential.

About Us

At Wessuc, we are leaders in sustainable environmental services, specializing in the management of biosolids and comprehensive tank and lagoon cleaning solutions. Serving agricultural, municipal, and industrial sectors, we are committed to innovation, compliance, and operational excellence in everything we do. We continue to expand our services and our capabilities to contribute to cleaner, greener, and sustainable communities everyday.

What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary with performance-based bonus
  • Comprehensive benefits plan (health, dental, vision, etc.)
  • RRSP matching program
  • Company vehicle or car allowance
  • Opportunities for continued professional development and industry certifications
  • A mission-driven company culture focused on sustainability, safety, and growth

Qualifications

  • Proven executive leadership experience (8+ years) as a COO, CEO, or senior operational leader, ideally within asset-heavy, service-driven industries such as construction, agriculture, logistics, utilities, environmental consulting, or industrial services.
  • Post-secondary education in Business, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field; MBA or equivalent executive training is an asset.
  • Demonstrated success in scaling operations, managing cross-functional teams, and driving performance in field-based service businesses.
  • Strong financial and operational acumen, with experience overseeing budgets, P&L, and strategic planning.
  • Solid understanding of human resources, labour relations, and employment standards in Ontario and other regions
  • Experience supporting workforce development, recruitment, and performance management.
  • Familiarity with contract law, regulatory compliance, and identifying operational and legal risk; experience working alongside legal counsel and regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to assess risk and ensure safety, liability, and reputational concerns are proactively managed across operations.
  • Experience implementing systems, improving processes, and leading organizational change.
  • Ability to quickly understand technical field operations and develop credibility with frontline teams.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with a collaborative and hands-on approach to problem-solving.
  • Willingness to learn about environmental regulations and support a mission-driven, sustainability-focused business.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence and willingness to travel across operational sites as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and optimize daily operations including biosolids hauling, land application, tank/lagoon cleaning, and related services.
  • Ensure full compliance with MECP regulations, environmental approvals (EAs), and other relevant provincial and municipal requirements.
  • Manage operational budgets, logistics, equipment utilization, and field staff scheduling.
  • Build and mentor high-performing field teams and supervisory staff across multiple sites.
  • Coordinate with municipal clients, farming and industrial partners to ensure project satisfaction and long-term relationship building.
  • Track and report on KPIs such as productivity, safety, environmental compliance, and client satisfaction.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives and support innovation in biosolids processing and field operations.
  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning alongside the CEO and senior leadership team.
