Job summary

Suncor in Fort McMurray is seeking a safety-driven Chemist to lead in an industrial quality control laboratory within a busy oil sands operation. You will maintain equipment, ensure QA/QC protocols, and mentor technicians while upholding safety and regulatory standards.

A Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and 5–10 years of refinery/oil-sands lab experience are required. You’ll work Monday to Friday at the Mildred Lake site, with relocation support if needed, and enjoy competitive compensation,

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is required.
• 5–10 years in an industrial quality control lab (refinery/oil sands preferred).
• Experience operating and maintaining lab equipment (GC, IC, ICP).
• Experience with process and analytical chemistry.
• Knowledge of Statistical Process Control.
• Familiarity with ASTM, UOP, CGSB standards and LIMS/ThermoFisher systems.

Responsibilities

• Maintain equipment, procedures and documentation to ensure timely, high-quality data.
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and complete FLHAs.
• Provide technical training on equipment operation and maintenance.
• Ensure QA/QC protocols are met and updated as needed.
• Prepare and participate in audits; act as technical support for Operations and Engineers.
• Commission new equipment and maintain related reports and documentation.
• Research new technologies that meet reference methods and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in Safety, Quality and Team meetings; support laboratory technicians.

Minimum Requirements

• Must possess a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from a recognized institution
• 5 to 10 years of experience in an industrial quality control laboratory. Laboratory experience in a Refinery or Oil Sand Laboratory is desirable
• Experience operating and maintaining critical lab equipment such as GC, IC, ICP, etc
• Proven expertise in process and analytical chemistry
• Knowledge of Statistical Process Control
• Excellent knowledge of relevant ASTM, UOP, CGSB, the LIMS system as well as the ThermoFisher system

Responsibilities

• Maintain equipment, procedures and document related to the equipment to ensure timely and high-quality data
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and fill out the FLHAs
• Provide technical training, including but not limited to operation of equipment, software, preventive and corrective maintenance on the equipment
• Ensure QA & QC protocols are met and update if necessary
• Prepare and participate in audits
• Act as a contact and technical support person for Operations and Engineers
• Commission new equipment and maintain related reports and documentation
• Research new technologies that meet reference methods and regulatory requirements
• Actively participate in Safety, Quality and Team meeting
• Offer guidance and support laboratory technicians whenever necessary
• Maintain the MLP limits, MOC, NCR, SOP, SLIM and Worksheets

Location and other Key details

• This is a base position at Syncrude Main Laboratory at Mildred Lake Site based in Fort McMurray
• Work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day
• If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory.
