Job summary

Suncor’s Fort McMurray main laboratory seeks a safety-driven chemist to lead quality control in a fast-paced oil and gas setting. You will ensure lab safety, uphold QA/QC, and motivate a team to achieve excellent results daily.

Requirements include a BSc in Chemistry, 5–10 years in an industrial lab, and experience with GC/IC/ICP and LIMS. Relocation support and competitive compensation accompany a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from a recognized institution.
  • 5–10 years of experience in an industrial quality control laboratory; refinery/oil sands experience desirable.
  • Experience operating and maintaining GC, IC, ICP and related lab equipment.
  • Proven expertise in process and analytical chemistry; knowledge of Statistical Process Control.
  • Familiarity with ASTM, UOP, CGSB, LIMS and ThermoFisher systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain equipment, procedures and documentation related to the equipment to ensure timely, high-quality data.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and complete FLHAs.
  • Provide technical training on equipment and software; ensure QA/QC protocols are met.
  • Prepare and participate in audits; act as a liaison for Operations and Engineers.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Must possess a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from a recognized institution
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in an industrial quality control laboratory. Laboratory experience in a Refinery or Oil Sand Laboratory is desirable
  • Experience operating and maintaining critical lab equipment such as GC, IC, ICP, etc
  • Proven expertise in process and analytical chemistry
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant ASTM, UOP, CGSB, the LIMS system as well as the ThermoFisher system

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain equipment, procedures and document related to the equipment to ensure timely and high-quality data
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment and fill out the FLHAs
  • Provide technical training, including but not limited to operation of equipment, software, preventive and corrective maintenance on the equipment
  • Ensure QA & QC protocols are met and update if necessary
  • Prepare and participate in audits
  • Act as a contact and technical support person for Operations and Engineers
  • Commission new equipment and maintain related reports and documentation
  • Research new technologies that meet reference methods and regulatory requirements
  • Actively participate in Safety, Quality and Team meeting
  • Offer guidance and support laboratory technicians whenever necessary
  • Maintain the MLP limits, MOC, NCR, SOP, SLIM and Worksheets
Location and other Key details:
  • This is a base position at Syncrude Main Laboratory at Mildred Lake Site based in Fort McMurray
  • Work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory.
