Job summary

Photech Environmental Services Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of Triumvirate Environmental, seeks a Chemical Technician at the Niagara Falls, ON location. The role involves lab pack processing, hazardous waste consolidation, and safe handling of highly hazardous materials in a regulated environment.

You will work in a team-based setting, performing evaluations, labeling, and packaging for disposal, while adhering to Ontario regulations and safety procedures.

Qualifications

• Completion of a two- or three-year college program in chemical, biochemical or chemical engineering technology.
• Experience with Ontario Regulation 347 of the Environmental Protection Act.
• Minimum 3 years experience in hazardous waste processing and material handling.
• Must be willing to consent to a criminal background check.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.
• Ability to work overtime on a regular basis.
• The Lab Pack Specialist frequently handles hazardous chemicals and is safety-sensitive.

Responsibilities

• Work as part of a team in a chemical waste consolidation/processing area.
• Work under difficult seasonal environment conditions (hot/cold)
• Donned and use of PPE, including full-face respiratory protection, Tyvek suit, hard hat, safety boots
• Conduct onsite evaluations to assess, categorize and segregate hazardous waste materials by chemical compatibility
• Safely consolidate processable segregated waste for disposition
• Safely repack highly hazardous wastes for disposition
• Prepare and label bulk waste containers per regulatory requirements
• Document and maintain records of waste processing activities
• Respond to emergency situations involving hazardous materials
• Operate lift trucks
• Occasional weekend work at HSWE events across Ontario

Job description

Photech Environmental Services Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of Triumvirate Environmental, one of the largest environmental services firms in North America, is seeking a Chemical Technician to join our team at our Niagara Falls, ON location.

Photech Environmental Solutions provides hazardous waste disposal services to industrial, research and institutional facilities across Ontario, where chemical wastes are sorted, packaged and removed from generator facilities and shipped to our hazardous waste transfer and processing facility in Niagara Falls, ON. Photech employs highly skilled chemical technicians who work within our Lab Pack processing operations, where a Lab Pack is then manually deconstructed for bulk consolidation within our Lab Pack production space.

The chemical technician is responsible for oversight and delivery of the entire process. The deconstruction and consolidation process requires experienced Chemical Technicians to sort through bins containing bottles of chemical wastes, separating for bulking chemical compatibility and disposal/recycling treatment technology. Chemicals are re-sorted into similar bins and labelled for the appropriate bulking station. Full bins are pushed further ahead on the manual roller conveyor to the end, where bins await labpack labourers who are tasked with the opening and bulking of segregated chemical wastes at designated bulking stations

• Work under difficult seasonal environment conditions (hot/cold)
• The donning and use of task specific PPE, including but not limited to: Full face respiratory protection, Poly Coated Tyvek PPE, Hard Hat, CSA approved Safety Boots.
• Conduct onsite evaluations to assess, categorize and segregate hazardous waste materials by chemical compatibility and disposition streaming.
• Safely consolidate processable segregated waste for disposition.
• Safely repack highly hazardous wastes for disposition.
• Prepare and label bulk waste containers according to regulatory requirements and company policies.
• Document and maintain accurate records of waste processing activities.
• Respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations involving hazardous materials.
• Safe operation of lift trucks.
• Occasional weekend work at company hosted household hazardous waste events across Ontario, providing technical chemical ID, segregation and packing services.

Basic Requirements:

• Completion of a two- or three-year college program in chemical, biochemical or chemical engineering technology or a closely related discipline
• Experience with Ontario Regulation 347 of the Environmental Protection Act.
• Minimum 3 years experience in hazardous waste processing and material handling.
• Must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication abilities to effectively interact with colleagues, and stakeholders, ensuring clear and professional exchanges of information
• Demonstrated ability to analyze complex issues, develop solutions, and implement strategies to achieve positive outcomes
• Must be willing to consent to a criminal background check.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
• Ability to work overtime on a regular basis
• Must be clean-shaven and able to wear all required safety equipment in both hot and cold temperatures during regular working conditions.
• The Lab Pack Specialist frequently handles hazardous chemicals and is responsible for donning and doffing personal protective equipment in both hot and cold work environments. This role is considered safety-sensitive
