  • Ability to work cooperatively with other trades and communicate in English.

The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba has two positions available for a Certified Plumber/Steamfitter. This position will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of facility plumbing, steam, gas, water, drainage, and condensate systems, as well as related equipment and controls. Duties include servicing hot and cold water systems, steam and gas lines, hot water tanks, steam and chilled water coils, valves, pressure and temperature regulators, fire hydrants, kitchen and laboratory equipment, autoclaves, steam cookers, furnaces, incinerators, and associated infrastructure. The role also involves inspecting and maintaining tunnels and manholes, estimating costs for repairs and new installations, maintaining accurate records of work performed, and ensuring all systems operate safely and efficiently while performing other related duties as assigned.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
  • Must possess a valid Certificate of Qualification as a Plumber or Steamfitter, and for gas installations (Class “B” Ticket) issued by the Manitoba Department of Labour. Preference will be given to candidates possessing both Plumbing and Steamfitting licenses.
  • Current Cross Connection/Backflow Device testing license from the City of Winnipeg required.
  • License: Class 5 driver’s license required
  • High School Diploma (Grade 12)
  • Minimum 5 years - extensive position related experience
  • Ability to direct the work of helpers is required.
  • Ability to estimate the costs of new installations and repairs is required.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other trades, contractors and service providers is required.
  • Ability to review ongoing construction projects and communicate any concerns effectively is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and contractors and to follow instructions in English (verbal and written) is required.
  • Analytical problem solving skills are required.
  • Ability to work productively independently and cooperatively in groups is required.
  • Must have the ability to work safely at all times.
  • Must demonstrate honesty, integrity, sound work ethics, and positive attitude.
  • Must possess multicultural awareness and workplace diversity sensitivity.
  • Must be able to work in confined areas including tunnels, crawlspaces, pits and shafts.
  • Must be capable of working on scaffolds, swing stages and with aerial truck devices.
  • Must be able to wear all forms of personal protective equipment including half face respirator.
  • Must be capable of performing the duties as assigned.
  • The work environment across the University includes high rise buildings, academic and research facilities with laboratories, libraries, lecture theatres, office spaces, residences for students and recreational space for an active staff and student population of approximately 40,000.
  • Industrial spaces also exist for essential campus services including high pressure steam and high voltage electrical distribution, water storm and waste networks, as well as tunnels, confined and restricted access spaces.
  • The full ranges of municipal services are delivered across campus including mail, parcel and parts delivery, garbage and recycling pickup, snow removal and roads and grounds maintenance.
  • Outdoor spaces are included in the work environment and the inherent climactic conditions include winter and summer temperature variations that range from extreme cold to extreme heat.
  • Most work is physically demanding and some work environments present hazards that involve safe work procedures and precautions.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to pass required FIT assessment and related safety training. Must be able to work in awkward, confined spaces and high locations.
  • Must be able to perform related duties as assigned.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality is required.
  • Will be required to provide acceptable Criminal Record and Vulnerable Persons Registry checks.
  • Installs and repairs hot and cold water systems steam systems, gas lines, condensate systems and related equipment as well as controls.
  • Installs, maintains or repairs hot water tanks, steam coils, chilled water coils and lines, valves, water temperature, pressure regulators, and fire hydrants.
  • Maintains and repairs to gas furnaces, incinerators, autoclaves, and steam cookers, as well as other equipment.
  • Estimates costs of new installations and repairs.
  • Maintains records of hours worked on work orders and daily time sheets.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
