Job description

The Centre for Trades and Technologies is seeking a positive, outgoing, and self-directed individual with excellent communication skills to provide technical services to students and instructors. This position supports the Engineering Programs, as well as other programs within the Centre, by setting up and assisting instructors during lab classes, maintaining shops and shop equipment, and managing the ordering and upkeep of shop supplies and materials. The position reports directly to the Associate Dean, Centre for Trades and Technologies.

The Technician will be responsible for the following duties which include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide support for student issues as they arise
  • Build teaching aids, and shop fixtures as required by instructors or the institution for the labs and classrooms
  • Assist students in labs; help instructors develop procedures for carrying out labs
  • Purchase office and shop supplies, and track purchases to ensure their timely arrival
  • Maintain, clean, and repair shop tools and equipment
  • Maintain inventory levels of equipment, supplies, and consumables
  • Pick up emergency items from suppliers using department credit card
  • Arrange and coordinate material delivery
  • General shop maintenance and cleanliness
  • Maintenance of storage areas
  • Organize and store all printed materials, warranties, equipment manuals/maintenance materials for all tools and equipment in the Center for Trades and Technologies areas
  • Catalogue equipment (label for inventory) and replace as necessary all tools and equipment
  • Supply requisitions through LP’s Colleague system
  • Department Mastercard management and administration
  • Forklift operation (as required for maintenance/housekeeping in shop areas)
  • Maintain WHMIS and MSDS manuals
  • Attend staff meetings
Required Qualifications
  • Two-year diploma in related field, preferably in Engineering or Surveying
  • Experience with soils, asphalt, concrete and surveying
  • Strong organization skills for store inventory for shops
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five (5) years of experience
  • Preference given to CET Designation (Certified Engineering Technologist)
  • Journeyperson Certification
  • Experience with Radiation Safety, certified or willing to be certified
Salary AUPE Class Level 10 Step 1 $29.28 per hour
