Job Description for Educational Assistant Positions
The Chilliwack School District is seeking enthusiastic, qualified Educational Assistants for casual, on-call work. Candidates should be available for daily call-outs to cover absences and possess qualities such as patience, dedication, caring nature, and ethics.
Applicants with experience as an Educational Assistant or formal training from an accredited post-secondary program with a substantial practicum are encouraged to apply. Required application materials include:

Educational Assistant (Special Education) - Division 5
Reports to: Principal
Job Summary
Under minimal supervision, the Education Assistant – Special Education supports teachers and students with special needs, working cooperatively with staff, parents, students, and the community.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports students individually or in small groups to reinforce instruction.
- Assists with supervision and classroom management.
- Supports student development in personal independence and self-care, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and mobility.
- Assists with lifting and positioning students as needed.
- Performs procedures as directed by health professionals, such as catheterization, tube feeding, and seizure management.
- Administers medication and First Aid as required.
- Supports occupational/physiotherapy programs under professional guidance.
- Encourages social and life skills development through positive reinforcement.
- Collaborates with teachers and parents to assess student needs and progress.
- Maintains cleanliness of therapy equipment and materials.
- Assists with food preparation and cleanup in the kitchen.
- Supports integration of students into regular classes.
- Implements behavior management strategies, including observation and record-keeping.
- Provides transportation for school activities.
- Adapts instructional materials to meet student needs.
- Prepares and manages instructional materials and equipment.
Equipment Used
Photocopier, computer, audio/video equipment, power tools, sewing machine, laundry equipment, and other classroom-related tools.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- High school diploma and a valid special education assistant certificate or equivalent.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Basic computer skills.
- Valid Safety-Oriented First Aid certification.
- Understanding of psychosocial issues affecting students with special needs.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures, including WHMIS and WCB regulations.
- Patience, care, tolerance, and understanding.
- Ability to apply behavior management strategies and respond to violent behavior.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Diplomacy and human relations skills for dealing with sensitive situations involving staff, parents, and students.
