Sun Life Financial in Toronto is seeking a Business Portfolio Manager to lead end-to-end portfolio oversight for the SLGI portfolio, driving governance, planning, and reporting. The role partners with Finance, Journey and Platform teams and senior leaders to strengthen transparency and execution.

You will translate business needs into cases and future-state solutions, owning annual and quarterly planning, and driving improvements with automation and analytics.

About the role

The Business Portfolio Manager role is responsible for leading and supporting key portfolio management activities across the SLGI portfolio. The role involves end-to-end portfolio oversight across financial management, expense allocation, strategic and annual planning, governance, initiative prioritization, resource capacity, benefits realization, and portfolio reporting. Working closely with the Director, Business Portfolio Management, this role drives issues from identification through resolution and partners across Finance, Journey and Platform teams, delivery stakeholders, and senior leadership to strengthen portfolio transparency, decisions, and execution. The role also assesses business needs and translates them into business cases and future-state solutions.

What will you do?

• Own key areas of the SLGI Key Initiative portfolio, including governance, financial oversight, strategic planning, prioritization, capacity management, benefits realization, portfolio health, and leadership reporting.
• Lead portfolio financial management, including forecasting, actuals/variance analysis, cost allocation, capitalization/amortization, resource costing, benefits tracking, and reconciliation across Planview, Finance ledger, and forecasts.
• Own the Investments Registry as a core portfolio control and govern alignment across the Registry, Planview Portfolios, AgilePlace, and ledger reporting to ensure portfolio information is accurate, complete, and reliable.
• Lead annual and quarterly portfolio planning, including intake, sequencing, capacity assessments, funding trade-offs, delivery constraints, dependencies, and prioritization recommendations.
• Monitor portfolio health across scope, cost, benefits, timeline, risk, capacity, and strategic outcomes; challenge assumptions, align stakeholders, recommend a path forward, and drive issues through to resolution.
• Lead portfolio governance and executive reporting, including decision materials, planning and leadership forums, trade‑off discussions, action management, and escalations.
• Drive continuous improvement across BPM’s operating model, processes, systems, and controls through automation, AI, dashboards, streamlined workflows, and consulting support on project impacts, risks, options, and future‑state solutions.

What do you need to succeed?

• 3‑5 years of experience in portfolio management, financial management, business operations, strategic planning, agile portfolio management, program management, or a related field.
• 3‑5 years of portfolio financial‑management experience, including forecasting, actuals/variance analysis, reconciliation, cost allocation, capitalization/amortization, resource costing, scenario analysis, and benefits tracking.
• Strong understanding of portfolio governance, planning, intake, prioritization, capacity, dependencies, risk management, benefits realization, and executive reporting.
• Ability to interpret complex financial and operational information, challenge assumptions, identify root causes, develop recommendations, and drive resolution.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to frame decisions, influence without authority, and build alignment across senior leaders and cross‑functional teams.
• Ability to operate independently in ambiguous environments, exercise sound judgment, and manage competing priorities, risks, and deadlines.
• Expert Excel (advanced functions and pivot tables) and PowerPoint skills, with strong business acumen and a focus on data integrity, automation, and decision‑making.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Planview Portfolios, AgilePlace, or comparable strategic portfolio and workflow‑management platforms.
• Experience connecting strategy, financials, capacity, benefits, and execution across portfolio, Finance, reporting, and delivery tools.
• Experience within Investments, Asset Management, Financial Services.
• Experience preparing executive‑governance recommendations and supporting benefits realization, business cases, portfolio health, and compliance.
• Experience with Power BI, automation, AI‑enabled tools, or other technologies that improve portfolio visibility and efficiency; PMP, CPA, CFA, CBAP, SAFe are assets.

Unique Requirements

• Some work outside regular office hours may be required to support critical timelines or deliverables.
• Some travel may be required (between Toronto and Waterloo).
