Job summary

Aird & Berlis LLP is seeking a Business Development Specialist to help develop and execute strategic marketing plans across our Toronto and national practice areas. The role focuses on growing new business with existing and prospective clients and coordinating with practice groups to target diverse industries.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of progressive marketing or business development experience in a law firm.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage select practice and industry group business plans, identifying opportunities to raise group profiles and cross-sell services.
  • Assist in identifying and evaluating new business opportunities and targets.
  • Work closely with lead lawyers to develop and track annual budgets.
  • Negotiate and manage partnerships/sponsorships with large industry associations and conferences.
  • Work with the Events team to coordinate webinars, seminars, conferences, and events.
  • Draft, pitch, and coordinate speaking opportunities for lawyers.
  • Draft and manage marketing collateral.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Communications and Events teams on market campaigns.

What we are looking for:

Our Toronto office is currently recruiting for a Business Development Specialist for our Marketing, Communications and Business team. This role assists in the development and implementation of strategies and marketing plans aimed at developing new business with existing and prospective clients. These activities are managed in consultation with various practice groups to help drive, attract, and retain a diverse group of clients in a variety of industries and sectors.

Responsibilities:
Practice/Industry Group Strategic Planning, Execution, and Support
  • Develop, implement, and manage select practice and industry group business plans, identifying opportunities to strategically raise group profiles and cross-sell services.
  • Assist in identifying and evaluating new business opportunities and targets.
  • Work closely with lead lawyers to develop and track annual budgets.
  • Negotiate and manage partnerships/sponsorships with large industry associations and conferences.
  • Work with the Events team to coordinate webinars, seminars, conferences, and events.
  • Draft, pitch, and coordinate speaking opportunities for lawyers.
  • Draft and manage marketing collateral.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Communications and Events teams on market campaigns.
Ranking Directories and League Tables
  • Draft and manage submissions to directories, rankings, and award organizations, including Chambers, IFLR1000, and various industry awards.
  • Manage an expertise database of deals and cases completed by lawyers at the firm.
  • Promote big deals and case wins in various publications including Lexpert and Canadian Lawyer.
  • Manage league table submissions.
Research
  • Conduct research, analysis, and reports on existing and potential clients, competitor activity, and market/industry trends using various platforms including CapitalIQ and Mergermarket.
Other Business Development Support
  • Support individual lawyers, particularly associates, in their business development and marketing efforts including thought leadership, social media, networking opportunities, and individual BD plans.
Requirements:
  • 3+ years of progressive marketing or business development experience in a law firm.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field.

This position requires occasional work outside regular business hours and monitoring of mobile phone communications to address urgent matters.

  • Ability to be flexible with daily schedule and willingness to work overtime as necessary.
  • Handle time pressure and stress of multiple demands.
Skills:
  • Microsoft 365 suite of Applications.
  • Preferred experience or interest in the mining and natural resources industry.
  • Exceptional writing skills, with the ability to understand legal topics.
  • Proactive self-starter and strategic thinker who can take ownership of their responsibilities – this is a hands‑on role that requires strategic thinking and tactical execution.
  • Has the ability to prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $105,000 annually; the base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal and market equity.
