Job description

Position: Business Analyst - Horizon New Energy

Horizon New Energy (“Horizon”) is a Canadian renewable energy company developing wind, solar and energy storage projects to deliver clean, cost-effective power across Canada. Horizon is a Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) platform company. CIP is a well-capitalized global private equity fund management company with ambitious growth targets and approximately EUR 30 billion in assets under management focused on renewable energy. Our entrepreneurial culture values ownership, accountability, problem-solving, teamwork and continuous improvement.

We are looking for a Business Analyst to help grow our renewable energy portfolio across Canada. As a member of the Horizon team, you will evaluate investment opportunities from early development through construction and operations. Your work will include pro forma modelling, PPA pricing, financial structuring, valuation and analysis of project financial metrics. You will be responsible for developing and delivering high quality project analysis for the projects and their commercial offtake agreements. You will work closely with our Calgary based Horizon team and CIP’s New York based Investment team to deliver project analysis that is consistent with the approach taken by these teams.

Working closely with Horizon’s Calgary team and CIP’s investment team in New York, you will develop business cases and financial analysis to support RFP submissions, acquisitions and commercial offtake agreements. You will also support project finance funding and closings and prepare presentations for internal approvals, monthly Steering Committee meetings and annual and semi-annual Board meetings, covering individual projects, portfolios and electricity markets.

You will join a vibrant, fast-paced renewable energy company with a start-up culture. If you are detail-oriented, well-organized, responsible and flexible, with excellent analytical skills and the ability to take initiative and manage work independently, this could be the right role for you.

The preferred candidate has 2–5 years of experience leading financial analysis of electricity projects for an independent power producer (IPP), or experience working within an investment bank, pension fund manager or private equity firm evaluating projects and developing business cases for renewable energy projects.

Responsibilities:
  • Independently run pro forma models and structuring sensitivities to inform structuring decisions to support project final investment decisions and project financing. Prepare business cases supported by analytical and industry research.
  • Review, analyze and prepare written summaries and PowerPoint presentations to support RFP responses and proposals for Canadian Crown corporations and corporate offtakers, including reviewing power purchase agreements.
  • Support the RFP team lead in preparing and submitting RFP responses.
  • Perform electricity market research and analysis, including structuring and running scenario analyses and sensitivities.
  • Prepare management presentation materials, including monthly Steering Committee and Board of Directors presentations, ensuring data and analysis are conveyed concisely and accurately.
Specifics:
  • At least 2 years of financial analysis experience working with complex pro forma models is required.
  • Experience in the electricity sector, specifically renewable energy, or a strong desire to learn about it.
  • Experience developing business cases using research on electricity supply and demand forecasts, industry trends and new business opportunities.
  • Experience supporting project finance transactions, or related experience in valuation and due diligence, is a strong plus.
  • Experience preparing detailed PowerPoint presentations of financial analysis and business cases.
  • Experience preparing RFP responses and/or corporate PPA RFP responses is a strong plus.
  • A degree in finance, accounting, economics, mathematics, engineering or a related field. An MBA, CPA or CFA is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Excel and VBA, experience creating spreadsheets, and knowledge of valuation and DCF analysis are required.
  • Strong knowledge of PowerPoint and experience preparing detailed PowerPoint presentations are required.
Additional Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing and interfacing with cross-functional internal groups at all levels.
  • Strong analytical skills, the ability to solve abstract problems with limited information, excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform complex analysis and financial modelling, interpret financial analysis and provide appropriate data and information.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • An entrepreneurial approach, a strong desire to learn, and the ability to take initiative and manage work independently.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills. Excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication with internal teams, senior management and external parties.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities. Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Fluency in English is required. The position is based in Calgary. You may be required to work extended hours periodically.
